Holmes fought both and said Shavers hit harder. I think the right hand from Shavers that floored Holmes was harder than the one he nailed Ali with in the second round. It seemed to have more behind it.
Liston was ranked inside the top ten for four years before Patterson have him a shot. In 59 he was 9 I'm 60 he was 3 61 and 62 he was number 1! Patterson chose to defend against the unranked Tommy McNeely instead of his number one contender. If that doesn't constitute ducking, then I'm not sure what does.
Again, in 59 Floyd defended against the nr 1 ranked (Ingo) and lost his crown, then they had their trilogy due to rematch clauses. As I've stated, yes, he could have taken on Liston in late 61 instead of in 62, but it hardly constitutes "years". Not even one year in fact. And, for the third time, when was Williams a natural candidate for a title shot?
You wanna talk about natural candidates? Pete Rademacher was making his debut! Much more deserving than Williams right?
That was three weeks after he defended against the nr 1 contender. If, say, Spence faces Crawford (or the other way around, if you prefer), I don't give a toss about who he faces three weeks after that. But, yes, there were more deserving challengers out there. Ten of them were also more deserving than the then unranked Williams, though. Williams wasn't ranked or beat a ranked opponent during Floyd's first reign. Most of the period he was ranked was actually during Liston's 1,5 years as a champ, but even then he never reached top contender status. So I don't know where this whole "Williams was super ducked" thing comes from.
