Am I mad for thinking Joyce Vs Dubois is better than any of those fights? Whyte Vs Povetkin two drug cheats and Pov about 50 Chisora Vs Usyk is probably the best but I see it being a worse beatdown than what Bell End Bellew got by the Heavyweight Lomachenko AJ Pulev is horrible, wouldn't watch this even on my PPV Laptop for 0.00 pounds
Surely you have a decent Broadband connection these days mate which includes any live sporting event as part of the package. You will be amazed when you find serious bargains on the internet these days.
Hmmm. I'm a bit down on PPV anyway, unless it's a worldclass matchup for a genuine title and there's at least a chance of the fight going either way. Not sure any of these fit my criteria. Whyte v Povetkin may be good, but I'm down on Whyte after the test nonsense and Sasha is not the fighter he once was. A legitimate fight that could be a good watch but not convinced that's PPV worthy tbh. Del Boy can be in some fun fights, but he's way past his best and frankly not at the level I'd expect to see Usyk at. It looks like an easy fight that Eddie's thrown him to buy time for the WBO mandatory. Which makes sense for Eddie, but not for me in paying for it, even though I like Usyk. Finally, AJ v Pulev. This may be the one I go for, although Pulev is getting on he does have some skill and durability. Still not an exciting fight and would need a strong undercard in my view. Sorry for the pessimism!
I’m not particularly interested in any of those fights. I will of course watch them all, though. I’ve gone off Whyte abit with the whole drugs stuff and Povetkin is basically finished at 40+ years old, and off the drugs himself. He was lucky to get a draw against Hunter and looked pretty crap chasing Hughie “The Skirt” around the ring prior to that. Chisora will be lively for no more then 2 rounds until Usyk starts lighting him up like a Christmas tree. Pulev will also likely make the AJ fight very messy due to his style. With Hearn over stretching himself to promote these events, we are also most likely going to get Trash undercards with David Price v Hughie and The Dave Allen cIrcus.
All good fights but not in a million f'n years should they be on separate PPV cards. Think I'll go for the free, easy and sensible route.
I’m not a fan of a million PPVs but Out of interest hat sort of purses does everyone think each fighter should be paid for these fights? with that in mind how does a promoter make these fights without it being PPV? granted better planning should be in place to spread them out to atleast bi monthly. my issue is more with Sky in that the value their subscription offers without the champions league and ufc etc. I don’t get much from it.
I always think if you’re paying for Sky you need to accept it’s a service for people who like a range of sports. If you’re not interested in cricket (Ashes, South Africa tour, Sri Lanka tour, every game of the World Cup since last summer) for example, then there’s a sizeable chunk of what your average ‘generally interested in sport’ punter is going to be paying for. I have absolutely no interest in UFC for example, so that not being part of the package has no bearing for me.
My main issue is that it doesn't really work as a free market. The fighters through their managers should get whatever they can for as easy / non damaging a fight as possible. Fair enough. Promoters should be working for the broadcaster to deliver best value, but they take a slice of the action, so they're not incentivised to deliver the lowest price, far from it. They also have upcoming fights arranged for these fighters so they don't want to be risking 50/50's if they can help it. The broadcaster who is already taking subscriptions from fans who want to see boxing is also taking chunk of PPV revenue so they're not incentivised to seek best value for the fans either. They also have an interest in building to the really big fights. That's how you wind up with the fights above. Leaving the mandatory defence aside, risk has been minimised to the money guys, Usyk gets a past prime, slow, limited guy who at his best was a level below him. Whyte gets a faded name who he should now have too much for if he's taken it seriously. From the fights above, lets say that AJ Pulev, with the unified belts at stake is genuine PPV. From the other two I think there's really only one justifiable PPV card with two contenders duking it out and two veterans providing an intriguing support: Whyte v Usyk Chisora v Povetkin
I agree. And that’s the point I was making, I get the subscription cost and this is where a chunk of the funds go and it all depends on what you follow. Beside the fewer premier league games Sky now have. The three sports I follow are boxing, football and MMA. Two of these are primarily on BT. Where’s as if they were on Sky I would be very happy with my subscription. besides that due to the value of purses being paid out and in many cases quite rightly when a fighter is getting punched in the head. There is no way for Sky or any other broadcaster to fund these without PPV. I do still think if Sky and Matchroom could give us two or three fights the level of Ryder vs Smith or even an Okolie va Glowacki title fight on normal Sky it would go a long way.
Surely if you follow football you pretty much have to have Sky? Friday night occasional PL and regular Championship, early Championship game Saturday, late PL game, both PL games Sunday plus Monday night PL versus BT who have what? One PL game a week? Obviously Champions League is the big deal for them but Sky show loads more football in fairness. I always think that even though BT show football, the likes of Man City v Liverpool will always seem to be on Sky.
I agree with some of your points for sure. But people have to make money and are not going to do it for free particularly the platform, promoter and fighter. For those fights my guess is the fighters would want Whyte vs Usyk - £4m each bearing in mind both have guaranteed title shots worth 3 times that coming up and no one would rush that. So its likely the fighters that have dictated the match ups rather than the promoters as if I was in their shoes I would be doing the same thing. chisora vs Povetkin £750k each that’s £9m on two fights without any undercard. That means with no one else taking a cut it needs to sell 500k buys which it just would not do. Hence why we don’t get the fights. With others taking a. Cut it needs to do closer to a million. Unless the fighters take a quarter of that which I’m sure none of us would ask them to do and they would just say no fight anyway. We get left with fights that aren’t even if the level we’ve currently got and likely another Chisora vs Price
