Can't believe this one hasn't been done before but I couldn't find it on the forum... Anyway, two of the baddest mother****ers to ever step foot in the middleweight division. The Toney of the McCallum fights against Bad Bennie in his late 60s/early 70s heyday. How do you think this one goes?
Which Bennie? Oh Bad Bennie. It's an interesting matchup. Toney is the superior boxer with the slick defense and snappy counters. Briscoe had the style to offset those of Toney. Pressure, physicality, consistant body puncher, not a afraid to catch a few on the way inside. The only thing I can be certain of is that it's a war. Draw!!
Haven't watched any of Bennie Briscoe, just going to say pressure fighters do not do well against James Toney. Barkley/Jirov/Holyfield. Toney had massive problems with much lesser fighters than a prime Bad Bennie at 160lbs, with his thunderous power and deceptively slick defense that severely troubled even the great Monzon. Definitely DO NOT count out Briscoe. Toney would have to be in his absolute best shape here to win, and that would be by decision, since you needed Valdez level power to bother him and stop him. The only thing that really lets Briscoe down here is his work-rate. Toney would turn the angle on him just a little too much.
Let's be real. Power just never seemed to count against James Toney. Heavyweights hit him and he was never knocked out.
I agree with you. Thing is, Briscoe rocked even iron chinned Monzon badly at 160lbs, and lets not forget how Toney was floored by that perfect Reggie Johnson shot. Toney would still have to be wary of the power, and more so the actual set up coming from Briscoe. This is a close fight IMO.
Looks like a skinnier Qawi. Still a sucker for the uppercut and not nearly as fast as James. Solid defense though. Toney wins 7/10 fights.
...That was quick. But, I do pick James to win just as you do. Just not an easy time for him at all IMO. Briscoe was too high in class for that at his best.
Not totally inaccurate, honestly. I just think that people should be acquainted with some full fights of a boxer at least before trying to fully evaluate their styles.
Best for best Bennie fits right into Toney's wheelhouse for mine. Bennie just kept on coming and hit hard to both body and head and took a great punch. The key here is that he was quite predictable. This didn't make him any easier for non slicksters as you had to handle this round after round after round after round. I think Toney would be a step ahead for the majority of the fight and make it look like Bennie needed one more gear.
