Not 100%. Chavez Ko'ed Roger Mayweather twice. Maidana swarmed effectively on Floyd and Broner. JLC and DHL both swarmed on FLoyd and did well. James let his hands go far more than any of the others.
I could see Toney winning. I'd lean his way but Briscoe was a cut above those guys you mentioned. Barkley was a bit faded but that was a great performance by Toney. I think Briscoe would need to focus on the body during the first 1/3 of the fight and shift to the head later. Toney should be able to walk him into counters quite often. Even in winning i think Toney will probably catch more leather than he normally did.
Well Briscoe isn’t knocking out Toney and I don’t think he defeated too many technicians who were as good as Nunn or McCallum. Bennie’s record was pretty spotty and inconsistent during the late 60s and early 70s when his prime was proported to be as well. Toney by decision
Bennie fought alot of iron at that time. It was just a vicious era to be from Philly and a middleweight. Your gonna catch some Ls ask Hagler. Toney is a little more talented and should win. It would be a fun one to watch. Ì picture Toney using his quick hands and combos to get off first. Then slip and slide Briscoe's return fire. At the same time he's gonna welcome Bennie inside quite often. Even Hagler got a taste of Briscoe's inside work, got cut and decided to box and move. This is a good mythical matchup. Never thought if it.
Toney decision of course. I do not like the Briscoe habit of wide left hook and wide right hook against this guy. He's open up the middle and will get hit. And those looping shots won't do much to Toney, if they do manage to not get deflected. 7-4-1 type decision.
I suggest you have a look at some of Bennie's fights Escudo. He was far from just a swarmer. He had smarts and could bang too. He had enough courage to get in the pocket and stay there.
Other than Valdez and Monzon, just about every Middleweight had a spotty record at that time. Look at the names on the record. Just to get a Title shot you had to get past at least 4 live contenders back then.
This is a fantastic fight for sure. Toney had the skills and wisdom of a 40's / 50's Fighter but Bennie had plenty of cunning too. I would think that Toney has enough to pull a decision out but he would have to be at his very best. If Briscoe had a pair of stilts big enough, he would have given the Klitsckos all they could handle. Great to see him being remembered on here.
If Toney is at his best, he wins a competitive decision. The Tiberi version of Toney would lose a decision
