I remember Richard Steele constantly warning frank about holding Tyson and rabbit punching, Ken. I reckon Bruno was that hyped and nervous he was trying everything against Tyson!
I meant by the time he fought Bruno. Just double checked and realised the Spinks fight was Rooney's last as trainer. I thought Rooney's last fight as Tysons trainer was the Bruno fight. My mistake. I don't know about Tyson "getting better and better". I'd argue he probably peaked with Spinks (who wasn't that accomplished a heavyweight anyway to be fair) and would've leveled out anyway. He got tagged once by Bruno and wobbled but otherwise completely dominated and he destroyed Carl Williams just after and nobody said he was on the decline then. Tyson even under Rooney reduced his head movement after a few rounds and struggled when a fighter knew how to tie him up inside. It's not like these flaws just materialized once Rooney got his marching orders. It's just that Tyson also got arrogant and neglected his training and let outside distractions take away his focus and his power and natural ability couldn't bail him out against Douglas. That's on him and whats to say that wouldn't have happened anyway even if Rooney remained as his trainer?
Correct. If memory serves me correctly, he was floored and nearly kod by jumbo Cummings who didn't even come close to knocking an absolute shot shell of Frazier down or even beat him.
I agree that Bruno seemed terrified in the second bout but he seemed well up for it and fancied his chances in the first. In fairness he took some huge shots in the first fight fought back, but Tyson simply had a speed and intensity that Bruno could never hope to match. Tyson was simply levels above Frank.
I remember that well. Very early in Frank's career. End of the 2nd as I recall.He didn't go down but Frank was absolutely out on his feet. The funny thing is, all those years ago without social media and 24 hour news, Cummings was really bigged up by the UK media and Bruno's eventual victory hailed as proof that great things were to come.
What would you pinpoint when saying he was getting better and better? Where were his improvements made between say Berbick and Spinks? Hopefully there's not a youtube video on this LOL
On the other hand Bruno always turned up in shape and ready to go. He was quite dedicated and professional with regards to his sport.
All of Bruno's good work came off the jab. If you took the jab away, he didn't have the co-ordination to fight effectively up close, other than the aforementioned holding and rabbit punching. Tyson's speed enabled him to close the distance at will, and Bruno didn't have the footwork and agility to move back out of range. The seven and a bit rounds they fought all followed the same pattern, with Tyson moving in, teeing off, and Bruno holding. As well as being a bad style match-up, there was the obvious factor of Tyson being a much better fighter than Bruno.
That was it imo, the Spinks fight was the time he stopped getting "" better "". He never produced a more complete performance afterwards.
Tyson still had great power, good speed and, most importantly a great chin, to compensate for his decreased head movement. Bruno had a weak chin and mediocre defense, so Tyson, even, though no longer absolute prime, could walk through him.
