Duran was just better. Armstrong had great stamina but he would keep his chin sticking out straight up and Duran would exploit that.
For me, and I'm sure everyone else too, this would be cannot-miss fight between two locks for top 10 P4P. Most people tend to sit on the fence or flip-flop on this one, but not me. I'm quite positive Durán wins, but that's not to say it would be a blow out, comfortable, easy ect; just that he wins. There's so little separating these two that I can't even pick who has a better nickname. These 2 happen to be my number 1&2 H2H lightweights as well. My key gripe with this fight is that the fundamentals of Hank's style, wouldn't work against Durán. The way he bullied people and created openings by shoulder barging and being the stronger guy aren't applicable as Cholo is the stronger fellow, for me. The way Armstrong smothered, which was wear he got most of his shots off, wouldn't work anywhere near as well with Durán either, as Durán's mixture of collar ties, underhooks and overhooks would keep Armstrong's arm's busy and in a position where it's easier for Durán to land than it is for Hank. If Armstrong is losing the battle on the inside? How is he gonna win? Peak Durán often weighed his opponents up, working off the back-foot early, waiting to counter and turn them like a matador, before attacking ferociously then going on offence from there, I like Durán to do similar here. Durán really was a master of all 3 main distances, and was among the best ever at forcing his opponent to fight to his preference. El Cholo's positioning was consummate, he perfected his ability to find a spot in the pocket to work relentlessly from without compromising his defence, this is paramount as to why I have Durán winning. I think he'd use these gifts to his advantage and nullify Hank's sheer volume by making him miss enough to match his own workrate via Half-Mexican Slickness. Hank is gonna start turning things up though, he'll have his moments obviously, where he weaves flawlessly and lands picture perfect counters until he's up-close and smothering. Durán would have to try and then Armstrong at these opportune times, but it's easier said then done. I don't think Armstrong would do well like fighting off the ropes, which Durán would make him do constantly. Armstrong loved to bore in with his head down, chin tucked, looking to land and forcing the opponents back. Issue here though, is that he was often subject to uppercuts and jabs, and Durán showed an amazing jab and killer uppercut against Thompson and Ortiz. He also had pretty wide, looping shots which Durán's tighter structure and superb head-movement would exploit; I fully expect Durán to consistently get off first and more often, with harder, sharper punches too. Cholo also stood with his legs wider and leant forward more than Hank, this means that he was more mobile on the inside, more stably balanced, and could quickly revert back to midrange, meaning Durán would be harder to hit and has more options if he's getting hit too much. All these little things add up for me, and carry more weight than Armstrong's higher pace. So I'm saying Durán wins a UD15, with the cards looking something like 10-5/9-6. Over a series Armstrong nicks a couple, but in a peak for peak one off: Give me Manos de Piedra. @The Undefeated Lachbuster
This fight would be a car accident. There is gonna be damage. Armstrong is gonna bring it for 3 minutes a round. I think Duran could take some of the things Amber's did and improve on them. The uppercuts especially. Duran knew how to create room inside, angles, subtle steps. I think Duran would bust Henry up. It would be give and take but the cleaner shots would be Durans.
Armstrong is a truly great fighter,,however you are talking about a shorter man coming straight at Roberto Duran attacking him . Hank will have great moments but they'll be swallowed up. I wonder how long Armstrong would be able to come forward through the hail lead.
Armstrong's a great fighter, but Duran's all wrong for him. Coming straight at Duran and having a porous defense is a really bad idea.
Less punches but cleaner and more quality, he'd look way sharper if not as busy Duran. He'll meet fire with fire eventually after out scoring Armstrong with the more eye catching work and that imo is when the beating starts, could be very late though. I agree with your post btw
This content is protected This content is protected Henry Armstrong's defence is really underrated and his strength (controlling Ceferino Garcia while spotting him 12lbs) is also sadly overlooked I feel they are both 10/10 as infighters and really can't be improved upon but I pick Henry Armstrong's relentless pressure, activity and stamina to secure the UD in 15.
