Robinson carried opponents to fix bets for the Mafia - But Who??

I read the Sugar Ray Robinson biography in 1972, he told the mobsters that he did not want to do anything illegal for anybody. There was a mutual respect, he never reported this to the authorities. Rocky Graziano was the one that was mob controlled for awhile, see the 1956 motion picture, Somebody Up There Likes Me, starring Paul Newman as Rocky Graziano. Robinson was a square shooter like another of his contemporaries Archie Moore.

One title contender he agreed to carry was Charlie Fusari in 1948. He once said that Fusari was his toughest fight. Why? Robinson said "cause I had to fight 15 rounds for me and 15 rounds for him."

 

He told a story to Dave Anderson about accidentally knocking out Al Netlow with a hook. Just a reflex. He had to go to the fellas and explain. Blinky Palermo the guy around in the those days.

 

Yes,I read that and tried to find it the other day,but after looking through several books I gave up.

 

I often wondered how high his KO percentage would have been if he'd gone all out on everyone in his welterweight days.

 

I've wondered the same thing. There was another fighter that Ray had agreed to carry because the guy had health problems and was gonna need to retire. Al Silvani was his trainer and he says "Robinson agreed to carry the guy, give him a payday"
Robinson ask Silvani to go work with the guy. All Silvani knows is Robinson is giving him a payday.
Fight starts and Ray is doing enough to win but carrying the guy too. Near the end of the 4th the dude (Lester)? Gets Ray near the ropes lands a decent punch but then the bell rings and he keeps punching through the bell. He comes back to the corner fired up. Tells Silvani "I got him now I'm gonna open up on him". Silvani says "all I know is the guy is getting a payday".
Silvani says "dont open up cause he may close quick" .

Sugar Ray walks out at the beginning of the 5th round waves his hands as if to say 'deals off'.
Floats to the center of the ring and boom! Lefthook. Fight over!!!!

 

I got the impression that Sugar Ray Robinson carried some opponents to give the fans a show. But he did state that if the fans became dissatisfied with him carrying an opponent, he would make an effort to score a stoppage regardless how the gamblers felt about it. There also was a story that a referee warned Robinson due a lack of action during a bout. After Robinson was warned, things changed abruptly with Robinson stopping his opponent.

The UK Daily Mail calls him a “controversial boxing broker” before detailing how well regarded he is in the boxing community. It does not mention his role in the Kinahan organised crime group, unofficially known in Ireland as “the Cartel”.

Similarly, laudatory articles on websites like British Boxing News also fail to mention his criminal past.

Irish coverage is markedly different. Last week, the Irish Sun called him a “mob boss” and “drugs kingpin” in the first two lines of a piece while an opinion article in this newspaper last Saturday states “Daniel Kinahan’s role as boxing’s new kingmaker is no cause for Irish celebration”.
