The only problem with fighting frequently at a high level is drug testing in camp, so if you don't have time for a nice long PED cycle between one fight and the start of the testing window you might not perform as well.

Lots of ATGs have fought dozen times a year, lots of prospects fight several times a year, journeymen do it, amateurs constantly have to fight and stay close to fighting weight(which is far more of a grind than doing it twice a year)

This all started with Mayweather who went into retirement between fights(and left the testing pool) juiced up as much as he wanted and then picked his opponent and either forced him to get off whatever he was taking or to stay clean between fights because FMJ was the A side and dictated the date the venue drug testing everything.

You saw it recently with kovalev who had the best physique of his career against yarde with shredded abs that even Andre ward commented on and then he gets dragged into camp without being able to do another cycle.
Same thing with Caleb plant, Luis ortiz and all these guys who turn down HUGE fights that are 2+ months away for being "short notice"

The only thing that is worse for your career than losing a huge opportunity against a Joshua or Canelo is being popped dirty or being forced to fight clean when you've been cheating.

Joshua, Canelo are using their A side muscle to do the same thing Floyd did.

I thought it’s because they’re already millionaires and they want less damage to the brain long term, especially heavyweights

Interesting. I don't know if what you say is true, but it would explain a lot of things in boxing.

It's a shame these alphabet orgs don't stipulate activity or you lose the belt. I mean actually enforce it. We can only dream.

Jose Sulaiman was an equal of Don King, Bob Arum. An exceptional figure in boxing man who was able to give value to the Green Belt, then the other copycat belts copied his blueprint due to the market expansion he created. It worked fine & know the leftovers will make $ of the hard work of the founders & eventually something stronger will take over.

Brain damage happens mostly in sparring.
Only 1 in 5+ hard punches that you take or times that you get buzzed as a boxer amateur or pro happen in an actual contest.
Sparring too much messed up James Toney, he got terribly fat between fights and all he did was spar to get in shape.

Sparring wars are the most dangerous thing in boxing.

You don't get paid to spar. If you fight twice a year 12 rounds thats 24 paid rounds that probably required 240+ sparring rounds that you don't get paid for.

If you fight 4 times a year that's a much better ratio

If you put your life at risk, will you fight less for more money? Yes you’ll do! Is easy to demand more for fighters , from you sitting on your couch! This aint roman times no more

Infrequent fighting among top fighters started before Floyd. Long before Floyd. IMO there are several reasons as to why top fighters don't fight frequently. In no particular order I'd say:

    1. Cable fighters. HBO fighters. Showtime Fighters, now DAZN.
    2. Greedy Promoters who want a stable that they can hand over a belt...yet stays in the same camp
    3. Ray Leonard IMO preceded Floyd's diva-hood. 40 fights in 20 years is not impressive. Excusing 8 years to rematch Hearns. Calling Hagler out to a packed Arena just to say...We aint fighting...then a few years later when he witnessed how Mugabi took him to the brink...well not let us cherry pick Marvin.
RJJ took the mantra from him IMO. WInning a title, then having several in a row that weren't title fights, what for? Floyd took note of what Roy took notes from Ray...as a fighter try to dictate to their benefit...usually to the detriment of the fan.
    4. PPV -Initially Closed Circuit t.v. provided a means to watch fights across the globe, but when PPV took over...we watched close to 2 decades with a similar price tag: $39.99 & $49.99. Now comes Floyd...and we witness $79, 89, $99 PPV? Damn....if that much money can be made..as @PistonHondai said leads to
    #5.
10 mil a fight? Well no need to fight more than once a year

#6. Like many athletes today, they focus so much on lean muscle mass and forget that a certain amount of body fat aint a bad thing. American football has it worse than boxing though...where a guy ruptures, tears...old timers from Jim Brown in football, to Ali in boxing. THey were in great shape. Not chiseled with so-called nutritionists. So when I see an in shape fighter like a Keith Thurman claiming injury-again...I dont doubt it. Today's athletes are more prone than ever to sit out due to injury.

#7. Too many belts. Easy to steer away from belt holder A to B when there is the WBC,WBA, IBF, IBO, IBA, NABF. To heck with fighting that killer with belt A...when I can take on belt D...for a vacancy against someone undeserving of a shot. like Manny vs Rito for a 154 belt contested at a catchweight.
Sorry Pac fans got to use him as an example again. He moves up to 135. There are 3 belt holders. He fought one and moved on up. To fans like myself that was an example of a top fighter not fighting the top at 135...he fought a title holder instead. Even HBO commentary pointed it out that David Diaz was the weakest champ of the bunch.

I could put drug testing at #8...but I won't knowing that argument can be countered with the likes of Baby Millers of the boxing world. What he fail 3 times? Damn! Some of these guys take the stuff and roll the dice.

Drug testing has nothing to do with it. The vast majority of boxers will only sign up to a proper drug testing protocol if their opponent demands it and has the leverage to force them to agree. E.g. Miller for the AJ fight, Ortiz for the Wilder fights. For all other fights, they can refuse it. It doesn't make them fight any more frequently.

Is that why James J Corbett only defended title twice in four and half year period or Jack Dempsey only defended title six times in seven years?
