This was something growing up I always thought my pops was lying about. Till I finally had seen video of it I couldn’t believe it. Doubt this ever happens again.
In his autobiography, Big George says something like “Boxing has always had an element of ‘Come see the bearded lady.’” He, more than most, understand that there’s a certain amount of the circus coming to town with boxing — you bring an event to some city and try to get people to pay money to see it. It’s not like a college or pro team with a schedule that people buy into and follow year-round and year after year. It’s a pop-up event every time with the exception of places that put on monthly club shows (or weekly back in the day). You need to attract people’s attention and that often means coming up with an attraction to build around. It’s why the Mark Gastineaus and Too Tall Joneses and others could (sometimes) draw crowds. It’s why a lot of George’s early comeback fights, when he was slimming down from 350-400 pounds and just testing the waters, took place off TV in backwater towns where there wouldn’t be as much scrutiny and people didn’t have a lot of other choices on the night he was fighting — you’re bringing something kinda crazy but definitely interesting to town, so ‘come see the bearded lady.’
