I apologize for barging in. Bonecrusher dominated Rodrigues in Adilson's own hometown in Brazil and lost a hotly disputed decision. It's been reported that the Brazilian crowd booed the decision rather loudly. This was before Rodrigues lost to Holyfield and Foreman.

Listen to the boos at the 40:22 mark when Rodrigues raises the Brazilian flag.

Also, Holyfield starched "Maguila" in the 2nd with one right hand a year before Foreman fought him. So Foreman was fighting a man who'd been hammered a year earlier embarrassingly. A KO is better than a decision but Bonecrusher wasn't supposed to win in a fighter's hometown anyway, just shedding some light on the comparison.

I'm assuming you have watched the fight, but I am not sure why you think Smith dominated Rodrigues or that it was a hotly disputed decision. He didn't and it wasn't.

Smith chased Rodrigues around for 10 rounds and, whilst having a better than usual moment, here and there, couldn't pin him down. Smith never really made any kind of sustained impression; was not finding his range with anything; missed a lot; threw a fair amount of rabbit punches and left himself open to the counter.

Conversely, despite his negative style (essentially, a lot of staying out of range using lateral movement, with clinching at close range), whenever Rodrigues on the rare occasion decided to attack, it looked good - and, unfortunately for his opponent, a whole lot better than what Smith was able to muster. There were a good few scrappy rounds, which would have been close on the scoring, I imagine, but the two similar scorecards (98-97 ; 98-96) for Rodrigues were about right, whilst the third reminded me of why the term "dissenting card" exists.

I can't say that I know exactly what's going on at around the time mark you cite for the video. What I do know is that when the third scorecard is read out, a little earlier (at approximately the 40:00 mark), for Rodrigues, the crowd is obviously in approval.

Yep - Holyfield caught Rodrigues with a terrific right to his temple and it was all over. Smith had an opportunity to do something similar. A KO doesn't care which country it occurs in.

Despite his loss to Holyfield, there was no guarantee that another fighter would repeat that KO result against Rodrigues, at any time. There never is.

So, Foreman taking Rodrigues out (this time with a left hook) was almost as impressive, in my opinion, and I think, in the context of an argument that has been put forward, i.e. that late-80s Smith and early-90s Foreman were "

", this result for Foreman, amongst other things, puts such an idea to bed.

It's not you, it's him. He's a Tyson fanboy and dishes it out but cant take it. He (literally) ignores anyone who makes a valid point.

Getting dropped and knocked out before the fight is barely halfway over is now outperforming someone who lasted the distance and wasn’t remotely hurt once by the much younger fighter?

You don’t believe that and if you do then you and common sense are no longer on speaking terms (which is par for the course with Tyson nut huggers which is why you try to turn Ruddock into the boogie man reality shows he most assuredly wasn’t).

It’s debatable that Witherspoon was any better than Moorer to begin with let alone the Witherspoon who was fat, didn’t gaf and likely wanted to lose of the second Bonecrusher fight. The Moorer that Foreman beat was better than that slob every day of the week.

    1. IMO Ruddock was unfairly stopped and was on the verge of stopping Morrison. Foreman wasn’t as close to winning. Regardless, Ruddock wasn’t a serious fighter after Lewis beat him and the Morrison fight doesn’t deserve much attention

    2. Before Smith, Witherspoon was 227 against Tubbs and 234 for Bruno. Those were two of his best wins. He was 233 for Smith. Go ahead and start the Witherspoon v. Moorer thread...resume, h2h, whatever. We know where it would head.

It is well documented by boxing historians and Witherspoon himself how much he lacked motivation for the 2nd Smith fight. On top of Smith being a last minute replacement, he was dealing with serious outside the ring beef with promoter Don King. You'd have to be disingenuous to suggest this was anywhere near a prime focused and motivated version of Witherspoon.

Even if for the sake of argument Witherspoon is a better overall boxer than Moore, you have to admit that the Witherspoon of the 2nd Smith fight wasn't on the level of the prime undefeated version of Moore.

I think Witherspoon pulled an excuse out of his ass because he was embarrassed. Smith rocked him with the first punch of the fight and beat the crap out of him until it was over. I think he even knocked his tooth out.

Witherspoon would’ve knocked Moorer out as evidenced by what happened in Moorer’s fights with Foreman, Stewart, Cooper and others. Witherspoon would shoot the overhand right on Moorer who would get clipped easily since he was a southpaw.

    You guys are both right.
At the same time we read once in awhile about Bonecrusher Smith being comparable to Foreman in power or even as a threat. He was neither.

Of course it’s “in your opinion” that Ruddock was unfairly stopped vs Morrison because that suits your fanciful narrative if him doing better against Tommy than old George. The fact is Morrison fought an uncharacteristically tentative fight and used movement to stay away from George instead of mixing it up and brawling as was his wont. He did this because he was fighting a bigger, stronger, tougher man and using his big edges in speed and mobility were the only ways he could win. He still landed plenty of big shots and Foreman didn’t blink whereas Ruddocks legs turned to jelly and he collapsed from a single (admittedly huge) shot. Foreman again did better because he lasted longer than 6 rounds, didn’t get hurt, remained a threat and Morrison had to box conservatively to win. The fact Morrison chose to brawl with 32 year old Ruddock and run from 45 year old George speaks volumes.

The best Witherspoon may beat Moorer but who knows? Both had flaws (Tim was fat and lazy, Moorer was chinny and often) unmotivated but both could box well and had good power. But the Witherspoon who got smashed by Bonecrusher was awful. He was out of shape, unfocused, feuding with his promoter and didn’t want to be there. He pitched a shutout on Smith the first time and I highly doubt that Bonecrusher had improved that much to cause that turnaround nor that he would have caught Tim cold like that if he had his sh1t together.
