It seems like heavies (as a group) tend to be the least skilled while smaller fighters tend to be the most skilled. It seems like, barring exceptions, that the most skilled fighters come out of the welter and middle weight classes and occasionally the light heavyweight class. It also seems like light heavy is the optimal weight class at combining skill with power in a pound for pound sense. Thoughts?
Interesting question. I'd say the most skill comes from 135, seriously stacked division. 147, 175 and 160 are good shouts too, but I'll take what LW has to offer. Heavyweights don't have as much skill because they don't need it. Power becomes absolute, and several champions have become successful from that alone. There's obviously exceptions, but on the whole it's pretty clear that things like power and chin make up for skill a lot more above a certain cut off weight than below. In the grand scheme of things I agree that 175 probably blends speed, skill and power the best on average, but 160 and 147 do too, it's probably a toss up. Light-heavyweight is my favourite, though. Yeah, my answer is LW. 135 consistently bred the best fighters ever, most of which were armed with ATG skillsets.
