Unless the undercard is exceptionally strong I can see this bombing at the box office by Skys standards. Either was I wont be buying it. As @Twentyman said the narrative of, we cannot make these fights without ppv is certainly not a legit argument in this one. This is why Whyte is happy carrying on with Matchroom. If Fury and Joshua win their next fights they are likely to do a 2 fight deal which will no doubt see Whytes mandatory pushed back again. Hearn who will be the catalyst for this delay will hype Whyte as the victim, the avoided man of the division, Whyte will shout Fury is scared off him lol. Casuals will buy his ppvs in meantime against well picked opponents.
Very true. In 3 years time Whyte should be ready to step up against Kubrat Pulev after a few tune ups against Gerald Washington, Christian Hammer and Johann Duhaupas. Pulev will be well into his 40s by then which is perfect for Whyte.
Could be absolutely spot on but here’s how I see it playing out. Joshua/Pulev in June, Fury Wilder in July. Joshua-Usyk November, Fury mandatory in December. Then it’s all set for a Joshua/Usyk vs Fury/Povetkin/Whyte winners v winners in 2021 with no mandatories in the way.
Decent fight for sure but it is a non-world title fight headlining again, with one of the guys coming off of a draw which should be a loss and the other a very uninspiring performance against Wach. What it would be is a very good chief support fight. And with all the PPV's lined up from Matchroom, I do wonder how good these undercards are going to be. My absolute favourite thing about this fight is how Whyte recently lambasted Wilder for fighting old men, and I he also mocked AJ for fighting an old men when he fought....Povetkin.
Terrible comparison , most people who take payday loans need them and have no other option, no one needs Whyte v Povetkin. I get your point though and won’t be buying it myself but it’ll probably make money so from a business point of view it’ll make sense.
Not read the thread so apologies if already mentioned. Fitzy said in an interview about 4 or 5 days ago that he is off out to America for 4 weeks with his next outing being on May 2nd. Joining up the dots regarding this date and the location, I would say that there is a very strong chance that he'll be on the card. Also, it wouldn't surprise me if "the very special announcement to come in the next few days" is Kell Brook given that after his last fight, he said ringside that he is ready to go again in 12 weeks. Anyway, looks like I'll be attending this card. I think it will shape up to be a decent evening. Whyte in 10 btw as Povetkin starts to tire.
To be fair Wilder has been largely fighting older guys. And the bigger problem isn’t that they’re old, moreso that they’re old and ranked beneath a load of better opponents. Nobody has any issue with a fight involving a forty/fifty/whatever year old if he’s legitimately ranked highly. But when you’re fighting old Stiverne or old Arreola or old Duhaupas and people are thinking ‘why are you fighting these’ you have to expect criticism. Povetkin, age regardless, is a top ten ranked heavyweight. Pulev, Wilder, Joshua and Fury are fighting each other. Whyte has already fought Parker, Rivas and Chisora who in turn is fighting Usyk. Who are the other options? Ortiz? He’s even older than Povetkin.
@ZiggerZagger @TonyHayers Yes, the comparison is poor, I was just making a point about a morally poor business model.
There are a few proper fights on the table for Whyte. Parker wants a rematch and he is fully justified in deserving one. He’s calling him out constantly. Hunter is another legitimate option seeing as he’s pretty much just beat the fella headlining the PPV. I don’t know what happened with Ruiz but I don’t doubt that fella would have got in the ring for some PPV loot. Surprised Usyk hasn’t been mentioned...Usyk wants the top fighters right away, but Hearn pairs him with Chisora. There are other options, however, if he wants to fight Povetkin, fair enough, just don’t justify it as a PPV. This is why some people get irritated by you on this board. I’ve softened towards you but people get a little wound up when you’re justifying these PPV fights from a business angle....most of us don’t care about the business viability of a fight.
Usyk was mentioned to Whyte but he said no one has heard of him and he doesn't speak English. This was after Usyk-Bellew. And before Whyte-Rivas
I get your point but PPV Boxing is a luxury people don’t need so is hard to see a moral argument imo. If supermarkets start selling £50 bottles of Champagne for £250 then so be it , if people are paying that for something they don’t need them that’s fair (ish) game imo and I see it as exploiting a market that hasn’t yet reached its ceiling rather than a moral issue. I get the argument that promoters bang on about how some fights can’t be made without PPV money though , we all know they mean ‘this shouldn’t be PPV but we know we can make more in PPV revenue than it costs to put in the event so it makes business sense’.
That Dillian Whyte post AJ loves fighting old men or fringe contenders whilst waffling on about how hard done by he is when he's turned down a title shot and 2 eliminators in the process. Oh and Chisora was 33 at the time.
How the f*ck is Whyte managing to get some stick over taking this fight? Povetkin - Yeah he is getting on now, but he's still dangerous and can bang. Enjoyed his recent tear up with Michael Hunter who I think is a good fighter in his own right. He's been absolutely shat on by the WBC and should've already received a fair shot but rather than playing it safe like many would do he is still putting himself in the firing line.
Agree re: ppv. It’s a good, competitive fight though. I do expect Whyte to win with a few hairy moments. Despite the fact I wouldn’t pay for the ppv I’m planning to head up to Manchester for it. Great city and yet to go to a fight there, assuming prices are similar to the o2 shows. Realised I’ve been to more Whyte fights than anyone else’s...probably been to more than a certain poster I haven’t seen post in a while.
