Few years back before i looked into the classics i always shat on marciano and his resume

"who did he beat " i would say

it wasnt until 2018 that until i looked back on his resume very close and clear and saw who his opponents were, that i felt like keyboard warrior crapping on a legend like rocky

    Ezzard Charles

    Jersey Joe Walcott

i saw how tough these guys were including my favorite light heavyweight Archie Morore

i saw how marciano beat these fighters ,these guys were way better boxers than marciano was they had their moments against marciano countering him and boxing well ,but as the fights went on so did the brutal beating maricano put on them .

Highest KO percentage in heavweight history 87.5 KO ratio(not offical until retirement cant bring up wilder until he retires )

    Walcott
    Chales
    Moore

    Retired undefeated

    6 title defenses

its amazing how marciano would break these legends heart and soul

with his 10/10 engine /workrate yes these guys were past prime but marciano faced them on when he could

    go look at their backgrounf

    Jersey Joe Walcott

    and

    Ezzard Charles

    check their names and accomplishments

see the fighters rocky marciano beat

    Ezzard Charles outpointed Joe Louis

and some thought that Walcott was robbed against Joe louis in the first fight

i use to be a critic until i shut my mouth and studied who did rocky marciano beat who were these men

I think Emanuel Steward was spot on in his analysis of Rocky Marciano,, he was perhaps the greatest overachiever in heavyweight history

By far the most disrespected. I think people just have a hard time with his size...how fathoming a short light weighted man with a tiny reach with a come forward awkward style could wipe out anyone is tough for people to comprehend. If Rocky were fifty pounds over weight he would be considered great to the same detractors...very strange dynamic.
The disrespect is so bad with Marciano that people Even crap on his opposition. Had people say Moore wasn’t a HW...well no he wasn’t strictly a HW and he’s not famous for it but he had close to 70 fights at HW and cleaned out the young dangerous prime portion of the division that many avoided. Finishes w a record of like 64-4-2 or something with those four losses coming as an old men to Rocky, Ali, Patterson and Bivins when he was young (revenged that loss several times).
Crap on Charles, Walcott, and especially Layne...think Layne personally attacked some fellows grandfathers in here.
Marciano had his flaws but was no less great then Liston, Lewis, Wlad, Holmes, Foreman etc. not quite on the Ali or Louis level though in my opinion

He gets shat upon. I think that's true.

But he also gets absurdly boosted in my view.

If you sit somewhere in the middle - like I do - you can see both people dismissing him unfairly (a lot) and really overrating him in strange ways.

    So it's equal-oppoiste-reaction i'm afraid.

Overall though, he 100% gets his due here. He was voted the 3rd greatest heavyweight of all time in Rummy's detailed pole a few years back and gets a few mentions whenever that comes up. Charles and Walcott are lauded like gods here by many, and they were his two chief opponents. So while a lot of what was written in the OP and since is accurate it is also inaccurate, which is odd, but absolutely true.

    Like I say, perspective.

As to this thread - I may close it. I'm sick of all the bickering and arguing and reporting and cursing, lying, exaggerating, whining that goes on in Rocky Marciano threads. If you want to discuss Rocky Marciano it may be better for you to go elsewhere and do it because you do not have a free reign daily to do it here.

Endlessly repetitive undermine forum quality at the best of times. You absolutely do not see these ridiculous perpetual arguments in threads about bantamweights where fighter's strengths and weaknesses are usually discussed without this endless wail. But Marciano detractors and boosters, especially, are ridiculous now, and i mean ridiculous.

The thread will go the same way as the behaviour within it.

He was voted 5th greatest in my semirecent poll lol, and people like Seamus, Pat M and McVey don't have him top 10, I had to talk George Crowcroft into putting him in the top 10, meanwhile noone here ranks him as the goat at heavyweight, not Gazelle Punch, nor SuzieQ49, nor I. Pat M even went as far as to quote he has "no outstanding physical traits". (Apparently even his legendary stamina wasn't outstanding, not to mention his strength).

The overall bias against Marciano is massive outside of the forum, but even inside the forum there's a slight bias against him. As Janitor said, the "Rockistas" are usually only active in defense for him.

That's extremely high IMO given his range is 3-14 for me.

I think that's perfectly reasonable personally.

I don't see how that could possibly be defended?

I did a quick google, top ten heavies of all time.

    Bleacher Report - 5
    Fight City - 5
    Give Me Sport - 2 (!)
    Boxrec - 5
    Matt McGrain - 3

Oh, so humbled to have made the front page of Google.

Anyway, I can't agree with anything you've said, but least of all this. Give Me Sport is voted for by the public and that's the most inflated ranking of all.

Nobody can get in trouble or anything, i'm just explaining to the OP what will likely happen to his thread. Or may happen, anyway.

I think having him outside the top 10 is undefendable but that's just my own perspective, I know you said there are about 12 Heavyweights worthy of the #3 spot, I disagree, I think it's primarily between Foreman, Holmes and Marciano

As others have pointed out, there is a very broad spectrum of opinions on this particular fighter.

Among those positions, there are two groups in particular, who are guilty of under rating him.

The first group are those who overvalue size as an attribute in a heavyweight boxer. They often respect Marciano as a fighter, and sometimes even give him a good pound for pound write up, but feel that they cannot back him very strongly against big heavyweights.

The second group are the anti Marciano fanatics, who will cross the street to pick a fight on this issue, and often have unpleasant racial undertones to their argument. If you produced footage of Marciano walking on water, this group would say that it just proved that he couldn't swim!

I agree with your sentiment, but i do have reservations about your closing it. There has been nothing written which is racist or personally abusive when compared to other threads which have been allowed to continue. It's just that you don't like its content. To me, that would be high-handed and arbitrary, and it would be infuriating to me if I was passionate about the issue. We all can choose to ignore the thread, after all, and allow those who want to rail on about the pros and cons of Rocky's career to continue to do so in their own little corner of the universe. Just sayin.'

i made the thread because i feel maricano is underated in a way i dont rate him top 5 but maybe 10-15 more like it

however if you feel you have to close the thread in case it gets out of control , i have no problem with it you are the mod you call the shots
