Demseu Mckean vs Rice. I smell an upset? Anyone watching?

 

Not watching keen for an update. Rice went the distance with Tony Yoka who is in that next crop of top heavies, if Dempsey can win & potentially stop him he has done very well

* Plans are in place to bring Tyson Fury to Sydney next yr to fight for a showdown
against Jai Opetia. Bob Arum who promotes Tyson Fury revealed details what
would be a global event and held at Parrmatta Bankwest Stadium in mid
2021. Opetia hopes to win the world title within 4 fights and vacate the belt
and move up to HW immediately.
Arum " When he ( Opetia ) finishes in the CW and turns to the HW , we'll have
him fight two top 10 HW in the States . If he comes through , it will be a major
attraction. We'll do it on Sun Morn , we'll get the benefit of PPV in the States. "
Its understood Fury would collect $ 20 million for the bout and Arum said the
Englishman is keen to fight him .

Parker stopped Murdock in the 11th with a good left hook. I thought that Murdock did quite well it was his biggest step up and he hadn’t fought in 12 months I think he proved that he is the best super middleweight in Australia.

 

Murdock can hold his head high. He showed some pretty solid durability to make it that far and get up after that brutal series of punches.

He definitely looked like a guy who had not been in the ring lately at times. Shots falling way short or being mistimed.
Shame he was a little underdone going into the biggest fight of his career but that's the way she goes in this game sometimes.
But he left it all in there and should be proud.

 

Australia vs New Zealand tonight in the Super Heavyweight division at the Asia & Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament.

Justis Huni v Leuila Mau'u. The winner is going to the Olympics. The loser will have to qualify through a repechage tournament (which I think the loser of this fight has a good chance of doing).

It wouldn't be the first time a Kiwi has upset our apple cart when it comes to Olympic boxing qualification.

I gave up on amateur boxing in 2004 when we sent almost a full team to the Olympics & left behind the only guy in the country who was capable of winning a medal. He was left behind b/c he lost to a Kiwi in the Oceania Olympic qualifying tournament.

Samoan-born Kiwi knockout merchants make me nervous.

Real Deal Geale. We had a decent Olympic team in 2000. As you'd expect from a home Olympics. Only one of them continued on to Athens - Daniel Geale. So what do we do come Olympics time in 2004? Send over a plane-load of boxers in nearly every division none of whom had a snow-flakes chance in hell of winning a medal. All went out in the first two preliminary rounds. Talk about a complete waste of taxpayer money.

We didn't send Geale who had an Olympics & World Amateur championships experience.

Just hope we get the right result tonight. Don't want to see our Olympics campaign derailed before it even begins. Again. That Samoan/Kiwi Super Heavy has upset written all over him.

I'm pretty sure Dan beat him twice that year.

 

Our 2000 Olympic boxing team was pretty decent - no medals, but a bunch of guys who would go on & have significant professional careers - Danny Green, Daniel Geale & Michael Katsidis.

We also turned several blokes pro who fought at the Sydney Olympics for other countries - Vic Darchinyan, Sakio Bika & Naoufel Ben Rabah.

I think it's fair to say all of those guys made a significant contribution to Australian boxing.

Justis Huni qualifies for the Olympics! Dominant display against the Kiwi, Leuila Mau'u. Too fast & elusive. The Kiwi couldn't get his punches off. I think the Kiwi can still qualify for the Olympics if they send him to the repechage tournament. He's very strong & will hurt people when he hits them.

The good news for the Kiwis is that David Nyika won his quarter-final & has qualified for the Olympics in the H/W division. So this part of the world will have strong representation at the Olympics in both the Super Heavy & Heavyweight divisions.

As I've suggested before on here, Huni & Nyika should do some sparring between now & then to sharpen up & give themselves the best possible chance of winning medals.

Congratulations also to Paulo Aokuso & Caitlin Parker who qualified for the Olympics this morning. Aokuso beat Clay Waterman for a spot at this tournament so has vindicated his selection. Well done to all.
