Lewis would had too much reach for him, he was too tall and Toney wasn`t as quick at heavyweight, he would have given Lewis problems though and if he caught him good might have knocked him out, the Holy that Lewis beat was about 5 years younger than the Holyfield that Toney beat.
Lewis by UD. He was just too big for Toney. James had one of the best (if not the best one) mandibles in boxing history and excellent defensive skills so I don't think Lewis would stop him. And I don't think uspet would be possible. Toney hit pretty hard even at HW, but Lewis was skilled and smart boxer himself, he wouldn't just stand and trade punches with Toney - had James came close, Lewis would just tie him in clinches like he did with Tyson and Holyfield. And from the distance Lewis would outbox Toney with his far superior height and reach. I think, however, that 217-lbs version of Toney would be able to beat less skilled big guys like Ruddock and Bruno.
Lewis by UD and as much as I like James Toney, if he runs his mouth too much before the fight, Lewis stops him.
I think Lennox stops him in about 3 or 4 rounds. Tommy had good defense, but a big man even hitting him on the top of the head would knock Toney's equalibrium off. It would be an odd stoppage, sort of like Witherspoon and Smith 2.
I don't think it would be the case. Lennox himself said a lot of times it was harder for him to hurt smaller guys bacause power wasn't as effecient when he hit much lower target. He always says that giving as example his fight with Justin Fortune. Fortune had certified glass jaw (all his 9 losses were by KO) but Lennox needed 4 rounds to stop him. Fortune was 5'9'' (same height as Toney) and was just a journeyman at best, but the height difference made it hard for Lennox to land punches on him with the same efficiency as he landed on big guys like Golota, Ruddock or Grant. Even last weekend Lennox mentioned his fight with Fortune as an example of how awkward very small guys are to land your best punches on them when he was commentating Frank Sanchez vs Joey Dawejko fight on PBC Fox broadcast.
Lewis busts him up and stops him in 7. If any heavyweight could stop Toney, either ko or tko, it's Lennox. Especially one that s riled him up by trash talking about his mother!
It's interesting that against older fighters who were bigger than Toney, Lewis is too big and would destroy them in 2. Here though, people say that Toney would casue him problems and lose a decision. Funny how people let their biases decide. BTW, Lewis would beat Toney and I agree that Toney would fair relatively well. Probably a decision win or late stoppage.
Disagree it being silly. Although Toney ballooned up to HW he still was competitive there against mediocre opposition. Lewis was ELITE however. Toney sees the final bell but is soundly beaten by UD unless he manages to slip inside and land big.
Why LOL? 214-lbs Zjelko Mavrovic lasted the distance and Toney's chin was much more proven than Mavrovic's one. Plus his defense was on completely another level comparing to Mavrovic
