If you were wondering what happened to the undefeated southpaw prospect-contender, who notched some decent victories and racked up several regional titles (WBC ABC Continental, WBO Asia Pacific, and both the WBO & WBA International super flyweight championships) before abruptly ceasing to fight - at least professionally - in 2017, with a record of 22-0 (13) ...let me put your worries to rest. He's still slanging fists - but in the amateurs, making a bid for the Olympic Summer Games (XXXII, slated for July in Tokyo). How's that working out for him, you ask? Well...not great. He "re-debuted" in the amateurs last June. Since then he's 1-3, getting stopped in one loss by countryman Zhihao Chen. ...yeah, big yikes. Tomorrow is his absolute last chance to recoup something from the last couple of years of sunk cost. He faces Daniyal Shahbaksh of Iran at featherweight in the final Asia/Oceania qualifying tournament box-offs. Elimination here probably means game over, and slinking back into the prize ring with his tail between his legs and the last vestiges of his prime gone with naught to show for it.
If he beats Shahbaksh, he'll be in, however - and become the first Hong Kong fighter in 56 years to have qualified. No pressure or anything.
Not surprised at all there. Tso was very crude as a pro. a washed up Kono was taking him to school only to be screwed over by the ringside doctors/judges.
Nah. He's basic and easy to hit. Padded pro record. About as shocked I would be if someone like Kownacki went back to the ams and was stopped by an unheralded fighter.
Not sure if this is true but I remember reading an interview with Hirofumi Mukai (KO victim of Tso Sing Yu) in a Japanese magazine in 2017 where Mukai alleged that Tso Sing Yu was a PED cheat (or maybe drug addict, my Japanese inst very good) and he got caught. Hong King didn't want the embarrassment so instead of getting punished he was given the option of quietly retiring from the pro scene and going back to the amateurs where he was considered a dead cert to win a medal for HK a the next Olympics
