many guys went 15 with Holmes - Weaver is underrated- when he fought Holmes he was a nobody with a 18-9 record but he rocked Holmes and gave Holmes hell and it was that fight that made Weaver believe in himself - after that he became a better fighter and had many wars with the best of the division so Weaver was not at his best in the Holmes fight - there should have been a unification fight once Weaver Ko'd Tate and then beat Coetzee. Lyle was a better fighter than Berbick IMO
YES HE IS! Better power and chin than anybody Tyson ever fought! Did Tyson ever fought someone with equal chin and power to Ron?Ron had higher KO ratio than anyone Tyson fought and was stronger with better chin than all those cans Tyson fought, and he defeated few HOFamers and fought better compettion!
Berbick, Thomas, Tucker all had equal or better chins. The premise that the 70s comp was better than 80s comp is an opinion at best.
Thomas,Tucker,Berbick????Did they survived Shavers or Foreman?Binavena maybe or Ali?Nope!Thomas was knocked by Weaver and Berbick was beaten twice by low energy Holmes! What is Tucker best win?Washed Young and green Douglas! Did those three you mentioned in their time faced any HOF and did they sruvived Shavers and Foreman?I do not think so! You compare weak 80s with golden 70s to somehow convince yourself of Tyson wins but every boxing fan knows 80s were weak compared to 70s and 90s! In 70s you have Ali,Frazier,Quarry,Shavers,Foreman,Chuvalo,Lyle,Bonavena,Young,Ellis, both Fosters, prime Holmes,Norton,Thad Spencer,Buster Mathis.... In 80s you had eashed Holmes, scared LHW Spinks, china chined Cooney and Weaver ex bodybuilder from army! 90s were not even close to 70s but 80s?What happened when Tyson got nice opposisiton in 90s?He lost! Old Foreman fought better just shows how guys from 70s were tough even at that old stage! Not mention that 42 years old Shavers knocked Simms in 1st round while prime Mike needed 3!
Which top 80s guy wouldn't have been top 10 material in the 70s? Which top 10 80s guy would be guaranteed to lose against name your top 10 70's guy here?
They would not be even contenders!Only Holmes,Holyfield and Page would be in top 10 but even then maybe!
I'm with you on Holmes and Holy but Page? Meh. No offense intended. He never really reached his potential imo.
Page was underrated! He never reach because his personal problems just like his friend who worked in his corner Oliver McCall! Page past prime lost to Ruddock! But prime Page from early 80s would beat Ruddock! Did you see how Page knocked Tyson with beautiful counter right?
I think the Greg Page who beat Coetzee could have beat Ruddock. I don't see him doing too well against prime Mike in the actual ring though. Sometimes knockdowns happen in sparring. Page had the kind of style that would have given Mike trouble, but I just can't see Greg's chin or heart making it 10 full rounds against young Mike. Greg just never seemed particularly motivated to me. At times he was a bit like Mike Weaver: fighting seemingly as if daydreaming or something. Page and Thomas could have dominated the heavies completely before Tyson. But they lost fights they really shouldn't have imo...
I agree with your stylistic argument of Lyle brawling it out, but honestly think that Tyson was much more over the hill in contrast to what made him lethal. Despite Holyfield fighting the perfect counter punching strategy, Tyson - Holyfield 1 imho is overrated. Bruno was extremely static and froze anyway, Tyson looked shyte against Mathis too (as described by the commentators as well). Tyson maybe would be able to keep Lyle down when hurt much better than sloppy Foreman, but the chance he´d give a much better fight than aging Bruno is very high for me.
