I think Pernell was greater. Overall better fundamentals, but Roy was great in his counters and ability to use his speed.
I think he handles pac or duran with his jab, distance, defense, speed of foot and hand and his durability. Plus i never saw pete tired in his prime. With just a jab he does it.
Roy Jones: had a Glass Jaw No Plan B in a fight No heart Fought mediocre handpicked opposition Sweet Pea was willing to fight the best. Glass Jaw Roy wasn’t.
Pea. It's ****ing Sweet PEA!!!! He also had issues with pressure, Ramirez and Chávez, despite definitely not beating Pea, they gave him really bad issues with his pressure and volume. Durán would do this 10 fold.
You feel Whitaker was nearly as athletically gifted as Roy Jones? And another opinion (actually the truth) warrants a ban? Ummm.
The only problems PETE had in the chavez or ramirez fight was with the judges and probably his hands from bobbleheading that ass!
Pea takes Roy to slick school and I'm not ruling out a mid to late round brutal KO win for him either
Roy Jones Jr. looked faster because he was facing much slower bigger boxers, that is why Roy Jones jumped up from 154 to 175 without any need to do so. At 154 boxers were faster & more likely to catch him, so stylistically Roy Jones was better vs Bigger Slower guys. Whitaker is the better all around boxer, both physically & in every other department (including a Gold medal & never ducking anybody) Even an older Whitaker was able to get into the kill-zone of deadly punchers & drop them...De La Hoya, Diosbelys Hurtado, he Also tried vs Felix Trinidad but he was older & Tito long Right Hand was too much Whitaker turned into something else, when he understands he has to adjust...Hurtado is one of the best Purest Punchers of all time This content is protected
Whitaker wins 7~9 rounds...ends up losing controversial decisions to the more popular Duran or Pacman. Promoters celebrate & move on into bigger mega-fights...Whitaker personality/style was never promoter-friendly, so he would have lost lots of controversial decisions in any era
That's cool, we disagree. I base it primarily on how rare he got hit. RJJ's prime fights be it Hop, Toney, McCallum, their connect rate barely went beyond 20/30%. Here is an interesting quote Post fight interview after Toney, Roy said he himself usually walked around close to 180lbs but had the ability to lose that weight & re-hydrate the next day allowing him to be the "bigger" guy who also ended by being the faster. I agree with Roy post fight Toney. As far as speed, who in any weight class he fought in had speed thta was even considered close to his? I saw it as Roy was quicker than anyone he faced at MW, SMW, LHW & HW. Also Gil Clancy stated said Roy Jones hand & foot speed is like Quick Silver. I give Roy the edge on defense cause he has never really been hit clean. I totally agree he was to which is why my initial post said he was a far better thinker in the ring that RJJ, but as far as physical? He is not powerful a physical attribute. He didn't KO people from behind the back, didnt break ribs, didnt drain himself prefights in other activities. Not taking away from Pernell -he is a legend in my eyes. But not based on physical attributes.
