Sun boxing journalist Colin Hart has written a list of the greatest bouts won by Brits on foriegn soil after writing an article saying BJS beating Canelo will take and miracle and would be one of the greatest results for a Brit fighter abroard in history. The list: Lloyd Honeyghan v Curry Ken Buchanan v Ismael Laguna John H. Stracey v Napoles Fury v Wilder 2 Benn v DeWitt Brook v Porter Where would a Saunders victory over Canelo place on this list should Billy pull it off when the pair meet?
Of that list, probably #3. I'd say Vitali/Lewis belongs, but Saunders/Canelo would be bigger. Fitzsimmons/Corbett should be a #1 lock.
I think Lewis vs Holyfield belongs to this list. Yes, Holyfield was clearly past his prime and he was much smaller than Lewis, but Evander was still a reigning heavyweight world champion and he still gave MUCH more resistance to Lewis than much younger guys like Golota and Tua who were good fighters. You can compare 1999 version of Holyfeild to 1978 version of Ali - well past his prime but still very good opponent
Tommy West's 1897 victory over "hitherto invincible welterweight" Joe Walcott is probably number one. And never, ever gets mentioned.
Jock McAvoy blasting out World Middleweight Champ Babe Risko inside a round at Madison Square Garden in 1935 in a non title bout. Now Risko was no ATG but he twice went the distance with Freddie Steele and other good men. Needless to say Jock never got his title shot.
Alan Minter beating Vito Antuofermo in the USA for the middleweight crown should get a mention. This was during the time when very few overseas fighter got a points victory across the pond at all.
You need to add Calazage-Hopkins/Jones, Lewis-Holyfield/Tyson I don't think I'd include Benn-Dewitt, maybe Benn-Barklay although Barklay wasn't near best in the division.
Fury beating Wladimir Klitschko in Germany could be included as it was a big win. His victory over Wilder, yes, so that's two very good wins abroad for Fury. I think Buchanan beat Laguna twice abroad iirc. Minter and Honeyghan got those big wins against Antuofermo and Curry respectively. Lewis beating Holyfield belongs. Haye stopping Mormeck was a decent win. If BJS beats Canelo, that would belong.
Freddie Welsh against Benny Leonard (or any of the other five Hall of Famers he beat stateside) Paul Ingle's win over Junior jones wasn't too shabby either.
I think with a lot of the Brits you’ve almost got to go with pre and post war because the true golden eras where so far apart. As @BeerGut mentioned, Welsh beating (hammering) Benny Leonard is a great win. Jim Driscoll’s newspaper decision over Abe Attell was huge as well. Of course it gets murky with newspaper decisions. Post war I think Lewis-Holyfield gets a little overlooked. Maybe because it was a formaility after the robbery in fight I or because Holyfield was past his best but to be the first undisputed heavyweight champion in over 100 years is big. Honeyghan-Curry, Buchanan-Laguna I, Napoles-Stracey are big because they were also unexpected. Calzaghe-Hopkins was expected and an ugly fight (thanks Hopkins) so probably doesn’t belong but Fury-Wladimir though boring probably does belong.
Lewis didn`t fight well v Vitali and was losing until he cut him, he was a big favourite to win that bout compared to the otyher Brits on the list, that bout is not as iconic as the others on this list.
Tyson wasn`t anywhere near the best in the heavyweight division when Lewis beat him, I felt he looked slow v Golota.
Yeah at the time it was considered a poor performance. I’m not sure Vitali’s standing grew large enough to elevate it that much.
