Maybe Floyd Patterson would be as hapless as Bill Brennan??

Fortunately we have film on both.

A certain not so hard hitting middleweight had Brennan on the brink of a stoppage, reeling about the ring like the proverbial drunken sailor when the final bell rang.

And equally quick foster but much harder hitting heavyweight would detonate Brennan.

    And Dempsey.

Jack pulled the trick when a geriatric Joe Jeanette offered to be a replacement in an exhibition.

    So how good was Brennan?

He was clearly respected in his day, but a quick look at his record, shows that he typically lost against the best.

He was getting beaten by Dempsey, Greb, and Miske, and Tom Cowler of all people seems to have had his number.

Having said that, he seems to have been very impressive against the B tier, and he seems to have been a feared puncher.

He gave Dempsey one of his most difficult fights, so he clearly wasn't a stumble bum.

The answer is that he was good, but not nearly good enough to be favorite over Floyd Patterson!

To hear Seamus tell it, he was a doofus with boxing gloves.

He fought black fighters, and sparred with pretty much all of them.

A soundbite does not constitute an argument!

No boxing manager worthy of the name, would agree to a last second change of opponent, to a significantly more dangerous opponent!

Let's say that you were managing Dylian Whyte, and he had agreed to a short match against some non entity.

Then you are told just before the opening bell, that he is actually fighting Luis Ortiz, despite not having done a training camp for a top level opponent.

Obviously you would tell them to f off!

    Context, my Brogham.

Jack was fighting guys he never saw in barrooms just a couple years before. Jim Jeffries was doing all-comers bouts less than a decade before. This was an EXHIBITION.

The shadow of John Lester Johnson cast long over Dempsey's pysche.

Wow. A paid sparring partner knows his place.

Harry Greb was a paid sparring partner in Benton, MI. He was summarily dismissed after owning Jack.

Well...Dempsey didn't run out of the ring, did he? Which is my point against your point.

As far as Greb owning Dempsey....yeah I have Compton's book. It's a great book, incredibly researched but is certainly is JUUUST a little biased towards the Pittsburgh windmill.
