Larry by decision, and if they were the same size Rocky might score a knockdown but I think Larry guts it out in a great fight. The one thing I always think about when talking about this matchup is not the actual thought of the fight but how Larry destroyed Rocky's image after he was gone simply because Larry was upset about losing to Spinks. And Rocky's brother heard it all. That really was something uncalled for. I felt so bad for Rocky's brother. To lose his brother years before and then have Larry say this. When I think about these two that comes to my mind. After Larry said that I was glad he lost to Spinks and didn't match Marciano.

He could throw a hundred punches a round, though. That is a hell of an equalizer, and will always be the answer for anyone pointing out the size advantage of a Holmes or Liston.

As for skill to get past the jab, it was a known tactic of his to hammer at the arms until his opponent couldn't hold them up.

I'll take Marciano, though I will freely admit that NEITHER fought anyone like the other and it is hard to say.

One of the things Holmes doesn't get much credit on his is wind and ring IQ. Holmes did not take breaks in the ring or rest in corners as often as other did, which limits any attacking fighter from gaining a temporary advantage. Holmes was a high energy fighter, and showed in in many fights. He also had one of the best chins was extremely tough.

I think Marciano would have a much better chance vs Ali.

I'd pick Holmes via clean decision or late round TKO, not from Rocky going down and out but from his corner stopping it.

Style makes fights and Rocky would beat Holmes because Rocky is all wrong for him!Rocky had good bob and weave, better punch, better chin and used both hands!
If Frazier could beat Holmes in sparing and that was old Frazier prime Marciano would beat him!
Renaldo Snipes,Cooney and Sahvers all chinny and one dimensional fighters with bad stamina last full 12 or 15 rounds with Holmes and beat him!Even LHw Spinks did well!If chinny,no stamina and one handed punchers like them could beat Holmes Marciano would kill him!
You said style makes fights and that is true and Holmes is talior made for Marciano!
Holmes is not mobile like Ali to be on distance and that would cost him!
I can not belive that you think that Marciano had less chance than china chined and one handed Cooney and Shavers!
Marciano is all wrong for Holmes and he woud beat Holmes!
Did some of those guys had stamina, chin and power of Marciano and last distance? And you gave Marciano less chance than them who beat Holmes!
Yeah style again makes fights and fighters like Marciano would beat Holmes 9/10 times!
Also if Tex Cobb and past prime Norton and Ali could last 15 rounds Rocky would do much better!
And about reach!Frazier,Tyson and Weaver had short reach too!
Holmes just is not Ali and his best win was?Did that guy was close to Marciano in anything?I do not think so!

Hahahaha sorry to say but you are dumb!
Tec Cobb did not have shin, power and heart of Marciano and lasted full 15 rounds!
Just imagine Marciano instead of him bodypunched Holmes to death and catch him with right cross!
That tall and unmobile freak would be knocked just like Shavers and Snipes did but even worse!

Holmes was just over a year past his prime against Cobb and STILL looked great.
Even Shavers couldn't knock down Cobb, my friend.
Immobile...this borders on troll territory. Ridiculous. Watch the 70s Holmes.

I love people comparing the oldest, most decrepit version of Joe Walcott, a guy who lost almost 30% of his fights, a guy labeled a career journeyman by his contemporaries, a guy whose superfluous and inefficient footwork only dazzles 21c highlight noobs, gets compared to an undefeated prime Larry Holmes, one of the 3 greatest heavies to ever enter a ring.

HOLMES past his prime in 1982? Please... He was in his absolute prime. Peak Holmes was 80-82. In this same year he stopped the undefeated Gerry Cooney. In the late 70s he was green

Of course but like numerous other fantasy fights, it is a timeless matchup and new generation of posters will always want to debate it when they join the forum.
