A thread on the General has been rehashed concerning Joe Calzaghe v Michael Spinks. I believe Joe to be a great fighter at 168 but he was dropped by Bhop whose 175 power was suspect as Bernard had no knockouts at that weight. So how does prime Calzaghe do against the prime versions of the following: Michael Spinks Ezzard Charles Archie Moore Bob Foster EMM MSM Victor Galindez John Conteh DMQ James Scott I personally have all of them beating JC
He probably loses all of them but now time for some reality. Joe at smw was better than anyone on that list bar Charles.
All of these fought in an era without same day weigh in, take that away from Joe and he wouldn't be SMW himself.
Don`t know why but i was never really convinced by JC so saying that i feel he would be second best to all you mentioned.
Joe Calzaghe was a great fighter in my book. But he spent too little time at 175 and only against aged foes to really determine how he’d do otherwise. My guess is that he might outclass some of the slower moving hitters at that weight but get beaten easily by some of the faster and more skilled ones
Calzhege doesn't have the balls to fight Scott at Rahway. Greb, Moore and Ezzard Charles would chew up Calzhege at 168. Greb best weight would be 168 like Tiger had that division existed.
Calzaghe would be too quick for most LHWs in history. His first punch, feint and counter were way quicker than nearly all of them. The only ones in the list is probably Charles. If Moore can't handle Marciano and Patterson's stamina and handspeed then how can he handle Joe's handspeed and stamina? Spinks has a punchers chance and has more range but when it comes to boxing he won't be at the races. Same with Foster I don't think people realise how good Calzaghe was.
Calzaghe was great but he was dropped by inferiorities of all those mentioned on the list. And you know that.
Hopkins and Jones Jr aren't inferior to all those mentioned. And after being dropped JC dominated Ali got dropped against Cooper it doesn't mean he loses to Liston, Frazier and Foreman
