All decent societies act to save lives, but we can't save everyone.
Letting the economy fall to pieces is the surefire way to make people die, millions upon millions of them, for decades to come.

Let's see how a health service operates in a society where everything has gone down the pan.

Let's see how doctors and nurses operate when the shops and transport systems are closed down then.
It's illogical to say "let's stop everything and save as many as we can" .... when stopping everything will be the death knell to everyone.
People acting as if the covid19 virus is the only thing we need to worry about killing us. And the shutting down of the economy won't kill millions and destroy society ?
    makes no sense to me.
But, hey, it seems plenty of people here are buying it.

For the likes of Boris Johnson, the toffs, the rich and the upper and upper middle classes and all those with multi millions in banks all over the world, yes, I'm sure it all makes sense.
they're probably already planning their escape for when they destroy the economy.

But the normal working people can't afford for the country to be shut down.

Shutting down the economy without any end point would be catastrophic. But society won’t be destroyed if we shut down for an interim period on a curved scale which we expect to top out around ten weeks from now.

I'm sure the top 10% will be fine with that.
But the masses will suffer terribly.
And the bottom 10% are only a couple of weeks away from bloody crime and bloody revolt.

Being rich won't stop you getting the virus though will it. Where would the rich escape to ? This is a world wide pandemic

No it won't! No safety measures or medical services for crowds of over 500 will be provided, which means the promotion will not be able to get insurance .

All ticket sales for fights in the next 6 months should be stopped and people who have purchased should be fully refunded immediately including ticket fees.

Ain't no stopping us now - Boris has just done that

I feel a bit sorry for Frank. One of the few times in recent years that he’s staged a fight with more than 500 paying punters and this happens. 99% of his shows could’ve still gone ahead under these rules!

Are you kidding? Look at the global economy right now, and this as only just started. Just one tiny example is Virgin who want a £7.5billion government bail out. Airlines want a bail out, transport companies want bail outs. My mate had to go into work this weekend (at a major hotel chain that he works at) to decide which staff they let go.

This is catastrophic, and it’s only just started. @Holler has a point about society not being a decent one who does nothing...I agree with the sentiment totally, I have strong socialist values, and this is why I’m saying this, because it’s going to be the under privileged, the vulnerable, the poor who will suffer terribly in the long run.

‘We’ve got a really bad case of the flu going round this year, be vigilant’.....we would have been non the wiser, but the economy would have ticked on.

I’m sorry mate but you’re not intelligent enough for this conversation if you believe your final comment. When people are dying and dying and dying en masse in makeshift hospitals made up of shut down hotels because they had f*cking pneumonia people would very much have ticked.

Mate the death toll and absolute crippling effect on the health system would be far worse than any recession. This virus is far worse than any Flu, look at the research it's properties have never been seen before and some experts say it could pose a threat to all human life, especially if it's allowed to continue to mutate through thousands of different hosts.

I’m sure you can dig out a better figure, but The World Health Organisation estimates that seasonal flu can kill up to 650,000 people globally. So far, we’re on 6400 global deaths from coronavirus.
