That's quite sad, to be honest.

We really don't know that for sure. As much as people want to say Larry was better, they never fought and the fact is Rocky deserved more respect in death than Larry showed. Equal size? Probably Larry would win, but we don't know for sure. It is all speculation. He said he couldn't carry his jockstrap. Saying that about someone who died. I was a young person at the time and I thought it was a little funny because Larry says things at times which are so outrageous that you have to laugh a little, but then you think about Rocky and his family and his memory and how the family must have felt by Larry's comments. That was beyond who was better or if Rocky's brother was there taking up attention.

What he actually said in response to heckling was , "if you want to get technical about it, Rocky couldnt carry my jockstrap",he also said Rocky was," a young guy fighting old men, I'm an old guy fighting young men".Both observations are accurate. Some of Marciano's family behaved like arseholes at the post fight Holmes press conference, and that's an accurate observation too!

While indicating he won't fight anymore, Larry Holmes talked in the ring about how ''people sometimes light candles for your defeat,'' alluding to the Marciano family. In the interview area later, he talked about how ''I'm 35 fighting young men and he was 25 fighting old men - to be technical, Rocky Marciano couldn't carry my jockstrap.'' As he spoke, he looked out at Rocky Marciano's youngest brother, Peter, who had been at ringside along with the late champion's two children, 32-year-old Mary Ann and 16-year-old Rocky Jr. Larry Holmes growled that 44-year-old Peter Marciano, who owns a sporting goods store in Hanover, Mass., was ''freeloading off your brother.'' In so many words, some of them obscene, he snapped that if he had hurt the feelings of the Marciano family, that was too bad.

By then, apparently even Larry Holmes was stung by the bitterness of his words. He tried to apologize, saying, ''Rocky's one of the greatest fighters of all time; for anyone to accomplish 49 victories, even if they were all bums, is some kind of record. I would've loved to have met him. If I didn't think he was a great fighter, his pictures wouldn't be all over the walls of my hotel'' in Phillipsburg, N.J., near his Easton, Pa., home. But after the arrogance of his earlier remarks, no apology was possible.

Let's not bury the lead... Look who's back!

And Holmes was more or less correct on every point.

I should be flying to the Dominican Republic at 2 pm today instead, I'm in the UK and being told not to go out for the foreseeable future.

He said," if I've hurt your feelings Peter so ****ing what?" The man had just lost a very debateable decision and a freeloading arsehole who was comping his accomodation and food was heckling him lighting candles in church praying he would be beaten and then celebrating that defeat.Under those circumstances I think his reaction was entirely understandable.

Here is the interview.and keep in mind this was the Holmes v Spinks show not the Peter Marciano show ,you know the Peter Marciano who fought his brother Rocky under an assumed name, [Peter Fuller]which resulted in Marciano being suspended.

Holmes respected Marciano despite a controversial comment about Rocky following Holmes first loss – a unanimous decision in 1985 – to Michael Spinks . Holmes said after the fight that Marciano "couldn't carry my jockstrap."
This guy always thought he was much better than he was just because he beat an old, broken-down Muhammad Ali. He has **** to say about almost everyone.
Larry Holmes is a habitual hater. Anybody that people have rated over him he's gonna hate on. Dude is wearing hats with his own name on them, that tells you everything you need to know about his state of mind.

Larry Holmes imo is a top 5 all time heavyweight, and in every interview I have seen of him, he has consistently refused to rate himself against other champs, saying you can only be the best of your time and that he undoubtedly was.
Holmes knew he could beat Ali as early as 1978 .I have never seen an interview or a quote from him where he takes credit for beating Ali.After their fight he went to Ali's dressing room in tears and asked him not to fight again saying," if you need money I'll give it to you". Before the Ali fight Holmes told the press," Ali was the best of his time, but now he is in my time." if there is any hating going on I'd say it's coming from you, not Holmes!

I'm with @mcvey Larry Holmes is without question one of the true greats of the sport, his first victory over Earnie Shavers qualifies as Art in Sport imo, an amazing proof just how Sweet this Science truly is. And I can't imagine anyone arguing strenuously that he could have beat Ali dating back to the date quoted. Holmes' tears and sportsmanship and obvious love for Ali (after stopping him) showed his stature as Great Champion...if you need further proof, watch this, Tyson and Lewis never approached this much championship Heart & Courage, as great as they indubitably were:

Rocky Marciano was a great, GREAT fighter. But I will always have trouble with him being ranked above Larry (even if Mr Marciano does MOST CERTAINLY belong in the top 10).

Not really. Holmes was better than anyone Ali fought in the 60s. I see Ali beating him by a seriously tough UD...but only by two or three points average a score card.

Holmes was no joke. I'm honestly a bit shocked you'd write that, given that you've actually written at least a few very good and thoughtful posts in the past.
