John Conteh v Joe Calzaghe

Ironically it was because of a right "plank" that I got banned. I was winning an argument in the lounge with Sugar 88 hands down.Wiping the floor with him. He knew he couldn't win fair so he played dirty... accused me of racism. I couldn't care less the colour of a person's skin any more than the colour of their car or their underwear! I got a 2-week ban. Very disappointing.

 

Interesting. I know he used to kill himself doing 12 stone.

 

Unbelievable on here, saying Calzaghe is underrated and he'd beat Conteh.
The irony.
Conteh was no Robin Reid or Jeff Lacy he was an extremely gifted boxer puncher who was very tough.
Due to his lifestyle and a broken right hand he declined the last few years of his career, but in his prime he would have seen Calzaghe off no problem.
I'm a big fan of Joe, but beat a prime Conteh?

Yeah, John started as a Heavyweight. Still makes me think he could handle Calzaghe physically.

 

Exactly, he'd come in close to 190. With Conteh it was same-day weigh-ins (same day as fight).

 

Carrying some fat. He weighed in at 175 the lunchtime of a 9pm fight....

 

Calzaghe could've easily fought at the old cruiserweight, early in his career.

Ability wise, the fact he blew away Eubank Sr and Jones Jr is absolutely ridiculous.

If they fought the rules would be the same for both.

 

Point being, Conteh wasn't bigger or he wouldn't of been able to fight 8hrs after weighing in had he struggled v. badly to make weight.

 

Conteh was probably 177 on fight night, Calzaghe as a super-middleweight was 10lbs heavier that that in the ring
