Agreed, we are talking about today's standards, as far as weight is concerned, Jerry Quarry was a heavyweight last time I checked, people in the past kept their body in better shape, they were not flabby, Prime Ali and Holyfield had good physiques
They were not clones but Frazier was one of the favourite fighters of qawi. And yes qawi made pressure too
I'd pick Dempsey and Langford to both beat Quarry.I'd also make Charles,Walcott,Tunney,Schmeling favourite over him.I feel they can emulate what Patterson and Ellis did.
Have to go with Jerry Quarry here. He was accustomed to facing heavyweights and ones who were elite at that.
It would be interesting. IMO, Quarry's best weight was around 193-95, I think the best I have ever seen him look and move was against Alex Miteff and he was 193. Qawi's best was at light heavyweight, but he probably could be even better at around 180-85 because he wouldn't have to worry about making lightheavy, so there wouldn't be a big difference in weight. There would be a big difference in height as Quarry for one of the few times in his career would have a height advantage, but not being used to having a height advantage might be a disadvantage. Quarry had a height advantage against Joe Alexander and almost got knocked out in the first round. Quarry had a nice hook and good combinations on the inside, Qawi had a nice jab and a nice inside game with short punches. I can't decide, both of them in good condition, it could go either way and I would expect a tough fight. Unless one of them surprised me, I think they could fight this one in a phone booth. It'd be a good fight for spectators, but not good for either fighter in the long term. I know the fight is supposed to be at 190, but Quarry could probably be at 190 easily from 193. In those days heavyweights often weighed in with shoes and other clothes so he might have been less than 190 when his "official weight" was 193.
For the first time I agree with you!Everyone except Tunney,Schmeling and Langford! Charles,Walcott,Tunney and Dempsey would beat Quarry by UD!
Much here would depend on how Quarry approached the fight. If he was in counter punching mode as he was against Thad Spencer and Mac Foster I think he would put on an absolute masterclass. He would pick his shots and take Qawi apart inside 7 painful and one sided rounds. If Jerry were to get one of his rushes of blood a la Frazier or Chuvalo the fight would be much more competitive as Qawi would certainly plenty of his own shots. Quarry would still probably win and maybe inside the distance but it would be an extremely hard evening's work.
