Bingo. He said himself he wasn't a welterweight. He was still not too far from his best when he fought Taylor and Taylor was comfortably ahead going into the last 10 seconds or whatever it was. It's was 3 1/2 quite long years later when he fought Whitaker at the weight he admitted wasn't him. He'd had almost triple the fights Whitaker had and was on the down obviously.

The Taylor mentions were more than fair. Great article by Chavez truth be told.

Chavez was too small for th welter weight class and whitaker?? They both were too small for the welter. Whitaker beats chavez any time, this mexican bull**** of "you ran you did not fight like un hombre un macho " is the classic one when some mexican got absolutely frustrated, out boxed and schooled.

You've sure got an axe to grind on poor old Hoolio. Taylor featuring as he did on his Best I've Faced is more than fair given his reasons and a fair level of balance.

Sure Whitaker may have beat him peak for peak at 135 and 140 but it was undeniably a fresher Whitaker. Whitaker is GREAT, as is Chavez. Taylor met him head on and was a fart away from a comfortable decision win over him. Sure Whitaker got robbed but Taylor fought a notably better version of Chavez.

Why do you want him to say Whitaker was the toughest fight? Why would he? It has nothing to do with whatever this preconceived notion of Mexican boxing or whatever you want to place on the situation here. Taylor beat Chavez up for 35:50 seconds and stood in front of him the whole nite doing so at a time in his career when people would not do that with him if they wanted to win the fight. But Whitaker outboxing him, in a fight that many other people who aren't from either American continent felt to be a fairish draw, should be who he gives the most credit to as the toughest fight and opponent? Again, if CompuBox has Taylor hitting Chavez a whole 146 more times in 12 rds than Whitaker did in that fight, why in the world would, or even should, he be expected to think the Whitaker fight was tougher? I think a lot of people get desensitized by watching so much boxing and seeing so many big shots land with what appears to be no effect at all into forgetting that getting punched by another man, whether classified as a big puncher or not, still hurts! If a guy hits you 146 more times in 36 minutes than the other guy, 25 yrs later, which of those memories is more likely to make you maybe wince in pain? The memory of chasing a guy all night who had your number, or the memory of the guy who stood in front of you and hurt you for 35 mins and change? Whitaker was a great fighter. Everyone knows he was. No one ever says he isn't. But he didn't impress Julio the way Taylor did in the first fight. Oh well. Shucks. It does nothing to deter any legacy of his or anyone else's.

    Randall hit harder than Tzyu

Dropped Chavez with a single right hand

Tzyu beat on a totally shot Chavez six years later before an accumlation finally stopped him

Julio felt the blows. He knows.

Chavez certainly hammered Taylor and did all of the horrible horrendous things to his body that we all know of. But, as Chavez says in the article we are all sniggering on about, he seems to very truthfully, and not just for reasons of flattery or anything of that sort, crediting Taylor for hurting him to a degree that he had not been up until that point. I recently saw a 6ish minute video on YouTube that I just spent about ten minutes trying to find again and unfortunately I cannot. The majority was narrated by Julio, If I am remembering correctly this link consists of some unknown amount of it.* As it was a vid with him speaking on the fight and being 6 mins or so it went into a fair amount more detail than in the article. He praised Taylor's performance very highly in the vid as well, and what sticks out most and wasn't mentioned in the Ring article is how he mentions being just totally wiped out and done by the time the 12th starts and it was to the point that he said he wanted nothing more than for the fight to end so that he could just puke everywhere, as that was just how exhausted and hurt and done for that he was himself.

Exactly what I was about to say. Plus he applauded every fighter that should've been noted: Taylor, Whitaker, DeLaHoya, Camacho, Rosario, Randall and Ramirez. All the fighters that brought the best out of Chavez.

Who would you say is overrating him H2H and what examples would you give? What sort of level do you see him beating and what sort of level beats him?

I think Chavez would have quite a few backers at 135. You should make a thread with a poll.
