I remember watching Joe Louis in the gym in 1936. I had just turned 29. His power was unreal. He would slightly lift the front of his right foot, and throw a hook at the bag making a sound people next door could hear. My friend Timothy would turn his head and wink at me every time Louis landed a hook on the bag. It was strange how in sync he was.

Hmmm. I think I've heard from other people that he was, in fact, the hardest puncher.

Oh, and not sure if this matters, these were elite, heavyweights who were champions and/or contenders over many decades....

Louis was the total package. Wonderful feet, great awareness of ring centre and frugal economy. He put you where he wanted you and he took you out. Only Ali, who seemed to come from another planet, can be seen as better.

I find myself agreeing heavily with 2012 Seamus, though I think the diminishing returns cap is a bit lower

His combination power was on the level of Iron Mike. Foreman and Shavers Wilder are on another level imo.

He's in the top 15, maybe top 10 for sure.
Foreman, Shavers, Frazier, Liston, Marciano, Tyson, Wilder... those are the big names people think of when they hear "power".

Louis was probably among the power of guys like Cleveland Williams (who won his first 21 fights by KO/TKO)
Being in the top 15 power punchers ever is amazing.

I'd put Louis around number 10:
    1. Shavers
    2. Foreman
    3. Wilder
    4. Baer
    5. Tyson
    6. Liston
    7. Tua
    8. W Klitschko
    9. Lewis
    10. Louis

Joe Louis could knock a guy out cold with any punch in his arsenal. Right cross, uppercut, lefthook was perfection.

Today i learnt that peak Joe Louis, Sonny Liston, Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes and Evander Holyfield weren't "proper" heavyweights. Wonders never cease.

Joe Louis was not a small guy. He was 6'2 and 207 pounds but had hw frame so i don't know what you mean when you say "for his size"
