    Gene Hatcher v Tyrone Crawley

Don't know if this bout has been looked at, but 10 rounds at break-neck speed. This really will test your skills on what you are looking for in a fight. And let me preface this by saying, no one is wrong. This was one tight fight and every round could go either way. NJ scoring on the rounds basis.

    Round 1: Hatcher
    Round 2: Hatcher
    Round 3: Crawley
    Round 4: Hatcher
    Round 5: Hatcher
    Round 6: Crawley
    Round 7: Hatcher
    Round 8: Even
    Round 9: Even
    Round 10: Hatcher

    Total: 6-2-2 Hatcher

Actual scores were 5-5 Draw, 7-3 and 5-4-1 for Crawley on a majority decision. I didn't see the fight back in the day but heard from a number of people that Hatcher was robbed. Well, although I felt his workrate won him the fight, I can see Crawley's counters and mid-ring style gaining him the nod with others. A good, fast fight and one fight where no one is wrong. It was that tight.

    Shane Mosely-Saul Alvarez, Super Welterweight.
23 yr old Canelo fights a 40 yr old legend. Mosely took tremendous punishment but kept throwing punches till
the last second. Canelo had a bad cut on his left eyelid from the 3rd round onward but it made no difference.
Amazing that Mosely was fighting almost 20 pounds OVER his best weight and Alvarez was 20 pounds UNDER
    his latest fight.

Just before the fight started, Nasim Richardson (wearing that stupid ass doily on his head as usual) shouts out to the ref Nady
"He's wearing a turtleneck". Nady says "what are you talking about". Richardson was referring to Canelo's trucks being too
    high, which they weren't.

Mike Rossman v Victor Galindez 1

Good fight in which Rossman gives an excellent performance against a slowing Galindez but I actually had it pretty even up to half way.

Rossman started brightly boxing well from the outside before Galindez started to edge his way into the fight during some good periods of infighting.

Rossman cut Galindez badly over the right eye (not sure in which round) and then rocked Galindez in the 9th. From then on, he seemed in complete control and the ref waved it off in the 13th (after looking like he might stop it in between the 12 and 13th because of the cut) with Galindez having nothing left.

    1 10-9
    2 10-9
    3 10-9
    4 9-10
5 9-10 (close - good round, excellent infighting)
    6 9-10
    7 9-10
    8 10-9
    9 10-9 (Rossman rocks Galindez)
    10 10-9
11 10-9 (Rossman looks in full control now, working on Galindez's damaged eye)
    12 10-9
    (116-112)
    13 Rossman TKO Galindez

Nigel Benn entered as top 5 WBC contender with a record of 22(22)-0. One of the baddest men Britain ever produced, and here comes Watson... who utterly dismantled him.

Watson showed some absolutely gorgeous fundamental skills. The shift of his feet to put the snap in that final counter was about as textbook as you can get. His subtle defence and brilliant footwork let him steer Benn around the ring and his left was just the icing on the cake.

Slow start from Khaokar, Moon barely won the first, but his clumsy pressure took it on a slight. Afterwards, Khaokar took it for himself, moving in and out with potshots, turning Moon and evading Moon's offence. In the mid rounds, Galaxy was picking him off. Moon couldn't land anything, he couldn't defend himself fully, he couldn't even successfully force Khaokar back. Galaxy stalking him, letting his hands loose at every opportunity and not having to worry about what's coming back at him. Late on it was gory, Galaxy beat the brakes off him.

In the 11th, Galaxy's thudding shots finally got to Moon, a sharp counter set Moon on the back-foot, swaying whilst Khaokar followed. After a lengthy combination, Moon slumped to the canvas. He looked more demoralised than hurt, but when he got up and came back with clubbing right and tried to fight back, you saw that wasn't the case. Galaxy didn't let up, though. He just went back to beating the **** outta him, and then the Referee gave him another count, although Moon didn't go down this time.

Moon was exceptionally tough, and determined as an ox, he was just missing something. Sung-Kil beat some brilliant fighters, but Galaxy just dominated in an ATG performance. Khaokar hardly put a foot wrong. Brilliant showing, a very diverse fighter who showed an excellent chin, heavy hands and a marvelous blend of defence and offence.

Oh my God, what a fight! A closet-classic if there ever was one. Damn shame that the 5th is missing. I marked it even to have a consistent card. The first round was absolutely insane. Hell, the whole ****ing fight was insane. Moon's style is so fun, whilst Nana had the stones to sit in the pocket with him, despite what happened in the rematch.

Moon's relentless offence, ridiculous conditioning and immense toughness let him tee off and out-work Nana. Nana showed a real piercing jab and nice movement. He also really tampered with the cut, despite it being caused by a headbutt.

Yeah, this was an amazing fight, George - just relentless action. You're right, this is the definition of closet classic. This fight is seriously slept on. I had no idea what I was about to watch. Some of the exchanges were just as wild and savage as Chang-Tokashiki, it was that kind of level of action.

Stylistically, I really enjoyed watching Konadu. Moon's swings seemed pretty wild and crude but he landed with a lot of them and he never stopped coming forward even when he was shipping punches. Relentless - there's no other word for it. I feel that had the fight continued, Moon would have caught up with Konadu and probably stopped him. If not, he'd have taken the decision.

A few comments on my scoring:
I made round 1 10-8 too based on Moon scoring the extra knockdown but I made round 4 10-9 even with the knockdown against Moon. It was a soft knockdown and I thought Moon otherwise won the round and gave Konadu a bit of a pasting as well which was enough to close the gap to 1 point rather than 2. And I decided not to score round 5 as I didn't see it (and need to find it now!). If I'd done as you did and made it 10-10 then I'd have made it 86-84 to Moon.

Sun Kil Moon v Nana Konadu
    1 10-8
    2 10-9 (close)
    3 10-8
4 9-10 (yes, Moon went down but he fought back so hard that I only made it a one point round to Konadu)
5 (godammit, this is too good a fight to be missing a round!)
    6 9-10 (close - crazy round)
7 9-10 (good boxing from Konadu)
8 9-10 (close - awesome back and forth action, but Konadu with the better quality work)
9 10-9 (close again and more savagery)

Moon 76-74 Konadu (of viewed rounds)

Yeah, I agree that Moon would've got to him later on, just like the rematch. Nana was a really good fighter himself, he beat the prime(or whatever was left) out of Román, as well as beating an early Sahaprom. He beat a very underrated Chuwatana too.

Personally, I think Chang-Tokashiki is better, but this is one of the best wars I've seen below 118, I wish we could've gotten Moon vs Khaosai and/or Tatsuyoshi.

Yeah, Chang-Tokashiki is better, at least because the ending was more satisfying but that we're talking about this fight in the same breath is praise enough, I'd say. Moon showed in a short career that he was the real deal. I checked out his 'Best I've Faced' after watching this and he's full of praise for Konadu - and rightly so.

    Michael Spinks v Marvin Johnson

Back to the 70s/early 80s light heavyweights again. Spinks shows his championship credentials by clean KOing former champ Marvin Johnson with as picture perfect a left uppercut as you could ask for.

Lots of aggression from Johnson early on and some furious exchanges from both fighters although more missed than landed. Johnson's aggressiveness was his undoing though as he walked onto the uppercut and gave up his top contender status to Spinks who would meet Eddie Mustafa Muhammad for the title in his next fight.

1 9-10 (aggressive from Johnson, landed some nice shots)
2 10-9 (close - Spinks looking calm, confident and in control. Misses with some right hands that look like they would have taken Johnson's head off had they landed)
3 10-9 (Spinks controlling the range, but a bit scrappy)
    (29-27)
    4 Spinks KOs Johnson

    Michael Spinks v Yaqui Lopez

This was the clear emergence of Spinks as a top contender in the light heavyweight division and the end of poor Lopez's time as a contender there after 4 world title shots.

I had Lopez ahead but Spinks wasn't far behind and the tide had already turned in the 6th when Lopez was hurt. The ending still felt relatively sudden though. Spinks would have always had too much for Lopez but this fight came only 3 months after his defeat to Saad in their epic 14 round battle. Going straight back in against someone of Spinks' caliber was probably not the wisest choice.

    1 9-10
    2 9-10 (close)
    3 9-10 (good action)
4 10-9 (close - Spinks starting to make Lopez miss and make him pay but Lopez came back well at the end)
    5 9-10 (close)
6 10-9 (Spinks has Lopez in trouble early but Lopez battles back admiray. Clear Spinks round though)
    (56-58)
    7 Spinks TKO Lopez

Yeah, this wasn't a fun watch as a Watson fan, but at least he showed his class before he was dispatched. Before the mid mark, the rounds were actually fairly competitive, especially 6&7 and both could've gone either way.

Watson demonstrated his immense skillset here, a nice defence and steady offence. He did tend to get away from his high-guard, and used more head-movement than he did vs Benn.

McCallum, on the otherhand, showed an uncanny ability to control the flow of the fight, to dictate the range and pace, whilst also changing tactics. He stalked calmly, baiting and waiting before whipping his signature shots downstairs. Whilst walking Watson, down he showed he could pick apart a classy guard, and cut off the ring well but also that he could nullify offence on the way in, his parrying of Watson's jab was masterful. He also started to draw leads from Michael. When he did he boxed on the back-foot, he parried brilliantly, and showed a diverse range of counters. Watson was out of his depth.

Watson lost due to the depth in class, as well as being broke down from body punching, not because his chin wasn't good or McCallum had devastating power or whatever.
