Tex Cobb, Earnie Shavers, Frazier, Dempsey, almost any martial artist who did lots of manual labor or farm work had tremendous functional strength.

That sounds like something Roger would say.

Both his form and his ability to press heavy weight we’re undoubtably impacted by the fact that he was unable to straighten his left arm and also had a pretty bad shoulder that had been bothering him for years going into Manila.

I admire Joe Frazier a great deal but that swimming event is fair game. I laugh every time. Not sure Joe could ride a bike but was just a pure warrior.

Modern boxers are better athletes than yesterdays boxers.
Because they are better athletes, they are better fighters.
Therefor all those guys who smoked Frazier in that swimming pool are better raw talents for boxing than Joe Frazier.

Also, Beterbiev would twirl that pool with his pinky toes.

    Is this the reznick?
And it's not to say they would be better boxers, heart comes into play too. More raw athleticism probably.

    Haven't you heard?
Modern HWs are better fighters because they're better athletes.

Frazier last in swimming and the 100 yard dash. Which former boxer would have done well? I think Hagler was on one of these events and did reasonably well.

All this harping on Frazier inability to lift a heavy weight has no bearing on a
boxer ability in a boxing fight or real fight.Remembered reading a old boxing
magazine on how Frazier sparred a well known NFL player who fancied himself
his chances of post career as a Pro boxer. Mid way through the spar Frazier smiled
he had launched a massive left hook and stopped inches from his head. The NFL player
suddenly realized a post career as pro boxer maybe wasn't such a wise ideal.
I knew a islander doorman Tom who for extra pay use to do some extra work off the
record. He never lifted weights just hit the heavy bag for hr every day and ran.
Remebered his best paid job he told me was when he was sent to a country
town to fight a massive local football player who had sexually assaulted
the local cop daughter but they couldn't convict him. The whole town knew he
was coming and the Football player said lets settle this in the carpark. They
squared off a Tom ko him with the first punch he threw a right hand and then
broke his back aroud a lamp post. Tom was handsomely paid and told never to
return to the town. This happend in the 90 's .

Earnie Shavers competed in a Superstars competition in the late 70's and won the 100 yard dash in about 10 seconds.
