Lewis is my all time favourite British boxer. Personally, I think one of the things we forget is how often Lennox went into a fight as an outsider. His opponent was the favourite when he fought Holyfield first time, Ruddock and Mason, and the fights against Tyson, Golota and Grant were a lot closer pre-fight than people remember. It's a shame the first Holyfield fight was scored so poorly, because it was an absolute masterclass for me. It was meant to be this huge coming together of two greats and Lewis utterly dominated it. Best jab of his generation which nobody has got close to bettering and that was the best demonstration of it. Shame he's become ever so slightly unlikeable these days but I presume that'll fade now that Wilder has been completely humiliated.
Lennox a legend. Like yourself I have such great memories of watching him fight, my old man waking me up to watch him fight, great times. I know the Tyson fight was years too late but I would of included it for sure. The hype for that fight was crazy lol, remember when they entered the ring and there was just a line of security in the middle to keep them away from each other! Good video as usual @Boxing First. I thought it was other way round tbh lol..When boxing and at his prime he had zero personality, played the cute card to the point of not worth interviewing him at times, shut up shop so to speak. I thought he mellowed a bit with age ?? I never watch him tbf in interviews and as a commentator he's lost at sea. For me h2h the best heavy ever, there are fellas that could make it to a trilogy with him, but I cant see someone beating him twice no matter who they are. Couldn't stand his fake "im British" bull either
Fake British? He was born in West Ham , moved to Canada in 77 when was 12 years old and moved back to UK in Bexley in the late 80s. Certainly more English than Ruiz is Mexican or Kownacki is Polish.
Certainly not Lewis fault, but his two biggest wins came when Holyfield was 9 years past his best and Tyson being close to 15 years past. All three of them are ATG’s but Lewis’ legacy suffered more from not getting the definitive Bowe fight.
Yeah, it’s easy to glance over it in hindsight but it was a massive fight. With the benefit of hindsight though post-prison tyson was smoke and mirrors for me, carefully matched and nowhere near the level he once was, as was shown by the Holyfield fights before this and his subsequent fights. He was an enigma though and astonishing in his prime before everything collapsed...
He was talked about in the Tyson build up as a guy of various nations which is probably accurate. Born and spent his early years in the UK, then spent his teens and early 20's in Canada, moved back to the UK, boxed most of his latter professional career in the US and spent a lot of his time in Jamaica where his family were from. I reckon if Lewis 'pretended' to be anything there would be someone saying he wasn't. I'm sure there would be Canadians saying he wasn't Canadian given he was born in Britain to Jamaican parents, lived in Britain until he was twelve, and twelve years after that was back in Britain to make his pro debut, representing the country he was born in, and a country where he'd box seventeen times.
Which is why it always made me wonder why Lewis was so keen to go with the 'I just went out and got the fights' line when discussing Joshua. You still have to negotiate, and ultimately Lennox didn't get the Bowe fight. You can't force the other guy to fight if he's not interested.
Nah, his heart was anywhere but England, to quote the man himself when asked who's next, "My fellow countryman Kirk Johnson"..If you need further proof, check out his post fight ringside interviewin the Rachman rematch where he thanked everyone, " Big up Africa, big up Winnie, big up the blacks" then when he'd finished he was then asked "what about all your UK fans Lennox that are here ?????" LL replied, "oh yeah big up the UK"...Once Maloney left, Lewis dropped the bull**** patriotism, it was Maloney that seen the money to be made trying to sell him to the British as one of their own, with his bull**** Union Jack suits
Yeah, It’s not outlandish to consider him British (I do) but I’m not convinced he identifies strongly as British and it was all about the coin...

Lennox Lewis was more a British fighter than Chisora and Whyte are (and people generally class them as British fighters).
