    Yaqui Lopez v Mike Rossman

Happier times for Yaqui Lopez here as he sets up another title tilt against Victor Galindez with a dominant win over Mike Rossman. Remarkable to think that Rossman, not Lopez, would be champion by the end of 1978.

A word on the stoppage - this fight should have been stopped in the 6th but the referee showed remarkable incompetence by inexplicably jumping in to break Lopez's flow after he had committed a full out assault on Rossman before stepping out again, allowing Lopez to carry on where he'd left off. But then he breaks into the action again - this time Lopez raises his hands in victory expectantly but the ref administers a standing 8 count for Rossman instead. Once Lopez is allowed to hit Rossman again, he pummels him before the ref steps in for a third time as the bell goes to end the round. Thankfully, Rossman's corner pulled him out before the 7th round could begin.

1 9-10 (close, cagey opening. Not much in it but Lopez cut)
    2 10-9
    3 10-9 (good action)
    4 10-9
5 9-10 (close but Rossman maybe edged it)
    6 10-8
    (58-55)
    Lopez TKO Rossman

I watched Carl ''The Truth'' Williams fight Larry Holmes.

I scored it: Carl ''The Truth'' Williams: 144 Larry Holmes: 141

    Williams was robbed.

Cleming, did you score this fight perchance? I would be curious of your score. Again, every round was so close anyone could conceivably have the complete opposite of my score.

Unfortunately not, just thoroughly enjoyed it from the get go. And that lead me to finally watch Crawley title shot vs Bramble, that was a truly great fight that I highly recommand ! 80's at their best :)

Anyone ever see Santos Laciar vs Betulio Gonzalez? I know both's styles, and from that I think that would be a WAR. But I haven't seen it, has anyone else?

With so much time on the hands these days with the 'stay at home' thing going on, I've really been concentrating on controversial decisions. Today I had another gander at the Carlos Zarate v Lupe Pintor fight from '79. First time around watching it live, I didn't score it but thought Zarate was an easy winner and totally shocked by the decision. Second time around scoring it had Zarate very close and couldn't understand how I felt Zarate had it wide first time around. Never posted my score then but sat down and did it one more time. here we go, 10 point must in effect.

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 3: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 4: 10-8 Zarate (scores a knockdown)
    Round 5: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 6: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 7: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 10: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 11: 10-9 Pintor
    Round 12: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 13: 10-9 Zarate
    Round 14: 10-10 Even
    Round 15: 10-10 Even

    Total: 145-143 Zarate

Actual scores were 143-142 (twice) for Pintor and 145-133 for Zarate. Now that last card by Bob Martin always raised eyebrows. But what happened was Martin was scoring on the 5 point must system for some reason (didn't Vegas sit down with these judges beforehand?). When it was caught, Martin thought it was a good idea to simply double his scores. Ludicrous! Because a 5-4 round now becomes a 10-8 round. Thus a very lopsided score. Anyways, a very tight fight and the two judges scoring for Pintor now make total sense and I can't run them through the dirt like I did back in '79. A very tight fight.

I remember that fight. Didn't score it but thought it was one of the fastest paced bouts of the era. Man, I gotta add that to the list of fights needing a rewatch. Thanks, dude.

The video is really strange, and doesn't actually break up the rounds as easily as you'd expect. So bear that in mind for my card. Gotta love the huge respect at the end!

Yeah, I didn't agree with this decision, but it's a by a round so I really don't mind. I did notice that none of the rounds I found were close enough to go either way, went to Román.

My knowledge of Santos' skills is fairly limited, but I know enough to know he's a damn good flyweight. The wins over Zapata and Gonzalez are very impressive, in name-value at least, but I need to see them first(and I can imagine just how brutal the Betulio fight was) to completely get an idea of him. Either way, he's a damn good fighter. I just don't know how good. He has a really exciting style, though. The Argentinian's bob and weave smothering ability was reminiscent of Armstrong, himself. He had a really good left hook, as well as a high output. He also closed the distance well; basically, the exact skillset you need to seriously trouble Román.

Román was exactly how I remember, an awesome all-round boxing master with a high workrate. His movements were sublime, as was his ability to work effectively at any range, it made Laciar's job of swarming much harder. He'd probably have benefited a lot of he had fleshed out his offence more.

Ballsy effort from the Thai, but the reality was that Moon was a beast who wasn't gonna let up, and Pong was out of his depth. He showed he was worthy of challenging for a title, with his cute skills and gutsy attitude, but not that he was any match for a guy like Sung-Kil.

In the first, Kobayashi boxed nicely, but took some heavy shots. The writings on the wall for a slugfest. The second was awesome. A real slugfest where Moon looked to bowl him over, but Kobayashi stood his ground and frantically swung to keep Moon off him. There were no KD in the third, but Moon pinned him down and just laid into him. It was brutal enough to warrant a 10-8 imo. In the forth, Kobayashi was taking a beating and simply winging, hoping to get a KO. He didn't. Shock.

The stoppage was just taking a pasting. He was struggling to stand, ffs.

Moon had thudding, Foreman-esc power rather than sharp, instant explosive bursts of power. It was like he was hitting the other guy with sandbags, at times. Didn't matter how much he loaded up the punch, or how short it's distance to the point of the chin was; Moon ate them like a snack. He was seemingly moulded from obsidian.

@Jel, @scartissue, @roughdiamond you ever catch this? It's another closet classic from Moon, imo. I had it a draw, but there were a number of close rounds. I'm really interested in seeing others thoughts.
