In real timeline is more interesting, but both scenarios are interesting. Could you explain your choice?
I can try. I think this would turn into an old school, two-way technical fight where Tunney's speed and jab take more rounds. Although Schmeling's right hand could counter over the top of it. I think Tunney's the smarter fighter so I pick him there.
Schmeling's main weapon was his right hand counter over the top of a jab, usually in combination with his cross guard which allowed him to 'fall forward' towards the opponent. The thing is, Tunney was an extremely smart individual and wouldn't allow himself to be lax with his jab - remaining cautious and constantly varying the tempo and speed to stay in control. I see Schemling having success early with this particular counter, before Tunney adjusts and quickly piles up the points for a clear UD, consistently turning the angle with his superior feet and speed.
In the possible timescale I would favor Tunney, but if we can shift Max back a few years, he might well take it!
I think Tunney was much faster and had more tools. Both guys were very smart and had terrific chins. Tunney by decision.
Tunney had the faster hands and feet, the better chin, better ring IQ, just smarter...and I say all this even taking into consideration what a brilliant fighter Max Schmeling was...as evidenced by a certain video that showed all the great techniques and skills that he used in Louis l. It's just that Tunney was something of an aberration in his time...almost like a time traveler really, with his modern looking style, studious approach and proven discipline. I not only think that Tunney would have beaten Max, but all the heavyweight champs who followed in Schmeling's path, right up to Louis...and I have some rather controversial, and let us say "unorthodox" opinions about Tunney-Louis as well.
I could take him a lot further than that. In my opinion the most under rated champion in the divisions history. Mostly because he’s become forgotten. A great, great fighter.
max was more proven at heavyweight. but damn Tunney looks so good on film. If Tunney can take the right hand because i'm sure max would find a way to land it he always did-If Tunney takes it ok I see him winning a UD
