I'll do you one further and say that Tony Galento, at the very least would have been a belt holder anywhere from 1980 to the current era.
I'll give you a small hint: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/1939-article-on-galento-nova.623767/ https://www.boxingforum24.com/threa...the-upcoming-louis-galento-fight-1939.627822/ https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/schmeling-and-galento-won-fixed-fights.624911/' And I probably have at least 70-80 more of these, most transcribing articles that are otherwise unavailable on line.
Here's Two Ton overcoming a 9" reach advantage to land a thumping jab. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/-R5e7ae7888e877 Here he feints a wild overhand right to draw the counters then gets down low to minimize damage before springing out of his crouch with a seamless double left hook to body and head catching his opponent in between punches. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/-R5e7ae8f577a8d Here we see him in boxing mode stepping in with the jab against the much longer taller man and racking up points before unleashing a surprise lead hook while getting inside the counter. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/-R5e7aea6728f57 Here he goes into defense mode firstly utilizing an Ali type lean back defense to avoid the right hand then stepping back ever so slightly out of range to avoid the left before ducking under the big right. He then closes the gap to avoid giving his attacker punching room. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/-R5e7aebfa22e2b Here we see a lunging left hook landing flush on his much bigger opponent before tying him up. He does on this occasion take a counter left not as effective as his own. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/-R5e7aecc3da3ff Here we see the arrow straight left jab in action again. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/-R5e7aedaedc167 Here he gets down super low drawing jabs from the great Joe Louis before exploding out of his crouch and stunning Joe with a big left hook before cornering him and going to war. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/KV5e7aeeefa0996 Here's another leaping left hook lead which he is actually pretty good at landing on people truth be told. https://ytcropper.com/cropped/KV5e7aeffa6051b
The Baer clips are pretty funny. Someone could make a whole YouTube montage highlighting Max Baer's ****-poor defense. Not sure I've ever seen a top-level pro fighter who reacts to incoming fire so poorly.
If you can't see Galento's high ring IQ & generalship in those clips, you need to get your eyes checked!
Most of these clips shows more how Baer didn't care about defense, but it proves my point - Galento wasn't senseless brawler, he knew how to box. Actually, the first left hook against Louis looks really sharp. Quite an explosive and powerful punch, Louis took it really well. I also like double hook against Baer, looks similar to what Jeffries did against Ruhlin.
1938-11-14 236 Harry Thomas 198½ 40 14 2 Convention Hall, Philadelphia W TKO 3/10 referee: Tommy O'Keefe The next day, upon the recommendation of member Jules E. Aronson, Thomas was banned for life from Pennsylvania rings by the state commission . Tank job.
He was OK for his time, if he comes along ten - Twenty years later he'd be unheard of, he'd be beaten by the top 30 guys. But entertaining.
Yeah Baer's defense is terrible. He also makes zero use of his height and reach advantage. Galento had a couple of moves. The first hook against Joe is very sharp and tho i didn't clip it the one he actually knocks him down with is ,maybe the best I've seen Tony throw - extremely compact and short with perfect timing.
Yeah they say that, but if you listen to the radio commentary on YouTube it is evident it was just a hard fought fight. No booing. No terrible foul infested beat down. There was no claiming of fouls. Lou was cut on the right eye. It closed. And he was decked 4 times in 14 rounds. Galento was cut on the lip, the ear and was badly wobbled during the fight.
