Hiya mate, I hope you're okay through these tough times.

    No, I didn't know about Joe's mother.

    That's really awful.

I'm still extremely lucky to have both of my parents.

I can't imagine what it would be like to lose one of them, let alone both of them in a short space of time.

I'm sure Joe doesn't frequent this forum, but out of respect I won't take the debate any further.

It doesn't seem right somehow. And I genuinely hope that he and his sons are okay.

    You take care mate.

    Hello mate

Yeah, same to you and family

I feel bad for him because he was always a bit of a loner and they're a very close-knit family and he worshipped both his parents and often referred to his dad as his best friend. Thankfully he has his two sons but this must be absolutely heart-wrenching for him so soon after losing his father.

    You too

Well lets take a closer look
Lopez who was 7-4 in his previous 11 fights and coming off a KO loss. I dont rate that higher than several of Calzaghes wins but I will say for example Woodhall.

J Davis who was 13-3 in fights and was 5-3 in his last 8 fights. I dont rate that higher than several of Calzaghes wins but I will say for example Sheika.

E Davis I dont think is better than Veit.

M Johnson. How is that win better than several of Calzaghes? Once again, I think the 2nd Veit win is greater

Qawi was a decent win at the time, but he was a 5ft 7inch LHW. No way better than undefeated 39-0 Kessler

EM Muhammad. Once again a decent win at the time but he was coming off a loss and not a better win than Eubank
Muhammad was 3-0 in title fights at that time. Eubank was well in the double figures of title wins

Cant see how you can really make a sensible argument, but do understand how fans look through rose tinted glasses and get all patriotic etc

No. Not even close to Calzaghes resume in any way at all when comparing SMW resume to LHW resume

Do I have to take this post apart? It's either tragically uneducated or dripping with fanboyism. Probably both.

I can school you if you want, but I'll give you the opportunity to bow out now if you so please.

Do what you feel you need to do.
I have never been schooled on ESB, so not expecting that to happen on this thread, but always happy to hold my hands up when not correct and not pigheaded to not change my mind when someone puts a sensible debate forward.
I dont rate those wins as good as you do. Sometimes it comes down to opinion but I cant see Spinks LHW resume as good as Calzaghes SMW resume by any stretch.
Make whatever points you want. I will look over and be objective, though may be a few days before I read/reply. I get bored on here more than I used to

Fine. Fair play, classy response to my baiting.
Yaqui Lopez was an amazing contender. In the Saad fights, he gave as good as he got and showed he belongs in there with anyone. Spinks beat him with an ease that no-one else ever enjoyed. Lots of fighters have patchy records, doesn't make them bad fighters. I take it you don't hold someone like Glen Johnson as a poor fighter because of his journeyman record.
Johnny Davis is another guy who's record is spotty but just watching him shows he's immensely talented. He ran Qawi(a borderline ATG) really close. It's far from his best win, but it's note-worthy. Anyone who can fight on even terms with Qawi is good enough for me.
You seen the fight? The Davis brothers were talented and in all honesty, probably underachievers.
Marvin Johnson was the first 3 time LHW champ, an Olympic medalist and one of the most dangerous fighters around. He'd beat the **** outta Kessler. What's more, is that he's also a bad style for Spinks, who destroyed him. It's an immense win. Only the Hopkins and Kessler wins are better imo.
Qawi would mince Kessler but not only that, but Calzhage too. Go watch this man vs Saad Muhammad.
Again, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad was supremely talented, but also a bit of a head-case. The fight with Snipes was at HW. In his worst performace ever. He was lean and at his best weight again for Spinks.
I'm not American. and an extensive part of my family is Welsh. I'm also not old enough to have been around in Spinks' era. No national bias or rose tinted here.
You're right. Spinks' isn't close to Calzhage's. It's levels better.

I figured you were going to answer with exactly this and use Johnson as an example.
In answer to your question. No I dont think Johnson was a poor fighter, but dont think he was a world class SMW. He was better atb LHW than SMW. He has more losses than wins at SMW I think.
Now with Lopez. I never thought he was bad but he was coming off a KO loss at the time and that has been skirted around I think. He (Lopez) was a decent fighter but was really beating many lesser ranked fighters and not winning against the higher ranked opposition. That doesnt mean he wasnt good but I dont think it was as good a win as several of Calzaghe to be honest.
Although I rate the win higher than say Gimenez who Calzaghe beat (who was also older and arguably more faded), it has a similar feel
Its like saying Boone is a top win for Ward because he looked like the winner to many or to rate Boone higher than his record suggests.
When Spinks fought J Davis, he was 13-3. I cant say much more

Im not disagreeing with that. I think many would say similar with the Dirrell brothers, and you could make an argument about them because one of them pushed Froch, but that doesnt make beating Andre a great great win for Uzcategui even though it is a good win

Kessler is a 3 time SMW champ. I cant see how you could rate him higher. Kessler was winning unifications and I would rate him higher but each to their own

I have and I dont agree

I didnt say you were any nationality. I wrote
As a passing statement about how people can get passionate when talking about boxing. I am not American but remember watching SR Leonard years ago and probably through the rose tinted at times

I have to disagree. Im not saying Spinks doesnt have good wins but overall I rate Calzaghes SMW reign greater than Spinks LHW reign and there are also far more defences as well

This would be very hard fight for JC he's one of my favourite fighters but spinks did have a solid chin, to the point JC would have to land a special flurry to hurt him.. respect to spinks was top shelf.. JC was loads better than he seems to get credit for on hear tho. If the RJ fight had been a few years earlier might have been different. But he bossed that fight and didn't have any interest in Hopkins till he said I'd never let that white boy beat me. Then umm got beat!! JC was no paper bag. Spinks would be very owkward for him tho maybe a step to far but will never know
