Nah Galento seems more like a club fighter in terms of his dedication whereas Tua was a proper athlete for most of his career. He was also far more skilled.

"..One of the most disgraceful fights staged since the days of the barroom brawls. Referee George Blake..would have retained his reputation as a great referee had he disqualified Galento." (The Ring, December 1939, page 16) Galento was permitted to thumb Nova's right eye until it reached a terrible condition. Finally Lou went down in the 14th round after being fouled for the last time. I still have the Boxing Illustrated report of this fight they called Galento's tactics "disgusting".

That’s all BS. And I read that too.

Listen to the fight. Especially the bit at the end where Nova is interviewed.

The Galento fight ruined me.” Nova fought Galento in Philadelphia. As The Times’ Jim Murray described it decades later, “Galento should have been arrested that night for practicing surgery …

In his next fight Galento beat Lou Nova by TKO in round 14 however it was deemed a disgraceful fight in which Galento should have been disqualified for repeated thumbing and low blows.
The Ring ringside report named it the 4th dirtiest fight ever.

That is BS. The commentary of the fight does not back this up. In fact the announcer says “The referee has done an Exceptionality fine job tonight. a difficult handled fight very well.” And Lou nova himself, right after the knockout says “Tough fight. One of the toughest fights Ive ever had,Tony’s a great fighter and a good tough man I have no excuses” if he had any quibble at the time he did not say so. And if he had, he would have been excused for it. Instead he called Tony a great fighter. What do you say to that?...

But it’s not my word. It’s Lou Novas word. Listen to him Seconds after the fight ended!,,. It’s not my word it’s the word of the live audience who did not boo. Listen to the commentary.

After the galento fight I think there was an effort to salvage Novas reputation as a contender. A legend grew around the loss being down to foul tactics.yet It is not evident from the broadcast at all. it was simply nothing other than a very tough fight.

Yeah. I know lol. I'm a fan of it in boxing. If you can get away with it, well done.

I only like it in the ring, though. I hate PED users and people who abuse dodgy decisions.

If you listened to the fight then you will know what I do. That it was simply a hard fought, tough fight. No outcry. No phoney controversy at all. Nova was in that fight. It was not some disgusting beat down..that was BS for people who were not there or who did not listen to the fight. I have. There was no booing in round five over foul tactics. In Round 5 galento was hurt by a right that staggered him. Tony began to wrestle. The announcer said it was a Hard battle. The fans cheered. They applauded.

I followed Darren McDermott in the early 2000's and got to know him. Have a look at his British Title challenge against Wayne Elc..k.
Macca had trained 3 months while still working full time doing groundworks for British Gas. He had invested sweat, pain and buckets full of emotional energy in that fight.
Have a look and tell me what you think.
