Tough one to score Foreman threw a lot but most missed. Ali landed the cleaner shots that actually moved George's head. Could argue either way. Ali seemed to get the better of it at the end 10-9 Ali
I have to give that round to Foreman. He was more active and continuously throwing. Sure, he missed a lot but he also landed a lot. Ali looked sharper and better in the last minute, but it's not enough to win out of 2 rounds of Foreman's nonstop punching.
I know it's none of my business to stick my nose and respond to this post, but I am itched to do so. This is actually a great topic. It got me to uncontrollably watch Foreman vs Frazier I and Foreman vs Norton before continuing the Ali vs Foreman fight. It was a pleasure to relive those legendary fights once again thanks to this topic.
Ali stole it landing the more cleaner eye catching blows towards the end as well as landing off the backfoot early on in the round. Sure, Foreman would have taken the round had Ali not mounted that attack off the ropes towards the end, but in the end, Ali landed with most of his shots whilst a lot of Foreman's shots were blocked where he was just winging arm punches whilst landing the odd blow here and there.
Easy round to score. Foreman was busier and he landed way more than Ali did that round. Even the last 30 or so seconds when Ali responded with some clean sharp counters, Foreman was getting his in as well. …...and for those in this thread who think the round was close, the body work by Foreman must be scored, those body shots were brutal. Looking at this round just confirms to me how stupid Foreman fought that fight vs Ali, he went all out like it was a three round fight. Had Foreman just bided his time with his longer jab and the occasional power shots here and there, he would have dominated Ali and put Ali in a situation where he'd have to take chances later in the fight where it would have left Ali, not Foreman vulnerable. This particular round 5 is easy to score though, one sided in favor of the Dummy which was George Foreman.
Jesus Christ, this just confirms to me what I already knew, that a lot of forum members here don't know how to score a round.
Oh please, most of foremans punches were ineffective and were getting blocked. The odd one here and there got through. You don't get given rounds for punches thrown.
If you went by just head shots landed Foreman won that round going away. Are you even scoring the brutal shots to Ali's body??? So much good work and landed punches by Foreman in this round and all you're harping on is that shots he missed. Of course he missed shots, he was loading up with a damn lot of those shots, but you still cant take away the many more that he landed in comparison to Ali who was covering up on the ropes for most of the round.
It's Foreman's work in the first 2:20 vs. Ali's work in the last 0:40. To score for Ali, one has to find his work that much more effective than the work George got done in his larger portion of the round. I agree that Foreman's work shouldn't go uncredited, the body punching especially – it wouldn't befit any of us, watching almost 50 years on, to buy into Ali's kidology and come on like George landed nothing at all of scoring worth. But I do think there's a case to be made either way. P.S. David Frost is such a creepy lickspittle, always makes me cringe to hear him yelling at Ali to "be careful" on that audio.
I think you can make a ring generalship argument for Ali, too, (despite Foreman's long spell of largely unanswered volume and the fact that he has Ali against the ropes for much of the round), in so much as he always appears composed throughout George's waves of aggression, whereas Foreman, though he keeps swinging, looks somewhat unravelled in that final 40 seconds. It comes off rather like Ali has dictated the choreography of the session. Ultimately, I wouldn't slam anyone for how they score this one.
Yeah I saw the 5 bodyshots landed in all that. They had very little effect on Ali who didn't look at all hurt. Ali's work in the last 40 seconds caused more damage than Foreman had in the whole round where he had Ali on the ropes.
