On what basis? For all the talk of Galento's power in this forum, who did he ever stop early? What are his most impressive knockouts?
Floyd would be a very heavy favorite here. Way too fast and he knows how to box. Galento eats lead hooks and combinations until the ref mercifully steps in. His only realistic hope would be to crush one of Floyd's testicles or something. And no, he doesn't knock Floyd down just because he managed to knock Louis down.
Galento wasn’t floored too many times in his career and if the commentary during his fight with Louis was correct, never before meeting the Brown Bomber. Tony wasn’t a beautiful specimen by any means. He was short, chubby, and wasn’t known for conventional training. But he hit very hard. He had a dangerous left hook. His chin was pretty solid. And that crouching style he had was awkward. He defeated a string of pretty good fighters and gave Louis some problems for a short period... I favor Patterson but I can’t see him cruising through this without some rough moments.
Bonavena hit hard enough to deck Frazier twice so he definitely carried a dig. Mind you Joe was a dreadfully slow starter.
Floyd is not a better Fighter than Louis, nowhere near, but he was quicker and that's something that Galento would have no answer to. Brian London was built differently to Galento but was a rough, tough type with a brawling style and Patterson gave him a steady beating for an 11 round stoppage. I see a fight with Two Ton Tony going the same way.
I think Patterson probably finishes him late or wins on the scorecards, but Galento was durable and heavy handed, so he posses a threat. I like Patterson though, really talented and I think some exaggerate his weaknesses.
Galento was a strong guy- they played up the part of his beer drinking untrained guy but in reality he was a strong big eating short solid animal with an incredible power and he had a solid chin - he had wins over tough black fighters like Leroy Haynes and Lorenzo Pack , Otis Thomas , Eddie Blunt and whites like Natie Brown and Abe Feldman and Lou Nova- Patterson also underrated but younger Floyd susceptible to power so If Tony lands Floyd may hit the deck but I think Floyd had the class here overall if he gets past Tony's power.
Patterson beats Tony's face into a spattered mess of gore, sinew and claret, forcing a stoppage whilst not losing a second of any round.
I've watched Patterson-Bonavena recently and I thought Bonavena won. Nat Fleischer agreed. Patterson was a favorite in NY and Oscar was from Argentina. There you have it, IMO. Neither fighter really went after it, however. They both had seen better days. Maybe Chuvalo couldn't put Tony on the canvas, but if you look at the Patterson-Bovnavena film, you'll find that Bonavena did in the fourth round. Off the top of my head, Jacques Royer, Pete Rademacher, Roy Harris, Ingemar Johannsson, Tom McNeeley, Sonny Liston, and Jerry Quarry had him down too. I like Galento's chances to knock Floyd down. If he was able to do that, there is no telling what might happen. With Galento, you know the left hook is coming, but when? He has a tricky way of feinting. He's a helluva lot tougher (by that I mean he takes a better punch to the jaw) than Patterson, but, of course, he doesn't have the stamina. And with all that weight and beef behind him, it's arguable that Galento hit as hard as any of the other guys that knocked Floyd down. I think you'll agree that it would be an interesting matchup. I'd pay to get a good seat.
