His knockout of Pat Cowdell was impressive...but he doesn’t get the notoriety that a Julian Jackson or a John Mugabi gets ...( in a pound for pound sense ) ...your thoughts ?
Azumah Nelson was a good puncher, he went to into the 15th round with the late great then WBC World Featherweight Champion Salvador Sanchez, on July 21 1982, in Madison Square Garden, before being stopped by Sanchez. Nelson was a last minute substitute for WBC no. 1 ranked, undefeated Mario Miranda, of Colombia. I saw the Pat Cowdell fight in 1985, he stopped Pat in round 1, the same Cowdell that went 15 rounds with Salvador Sanchez in Dec 1981, before dropping a close verdict to Salvador, as Pat was dropped in round 15. Nelson put pressure on an opponent, wearing them down with constant pressure.
Ya he wasn't in the Little Red or Alexis Arguello range but he was very heavy handed. I thought he was going to knock Jeff Fenech's head off of his shoulders at the end of that one.
Very hard, consistently .. kind of like a Hagler .. and an exceptional fighter .. the showing he mad against Sanchez with such little experience and so little time to prepare was unreal ..
Well, if he'd knocked out Mugabi or Jackson I'd rate him way higher as a puncher but that didn't even happen, and I suggest you check boxrec for that because they may have been hacked or something.
Very good, but not spectacular power. He would very demonstratively load up on his shots occasionally, preening as he did so in almost the manner of a peacock showing off his plumage. Almost daring the opponent to do something about it. Most didn't.
