What's the best argument against FMJ being the greatest?

Some people point to the Castillo fight, and say that he should've lost.
Maybe they're right, but it was a close fight with a world class contender.
Rematched less than 6 months later, easy win for FMJ.
Some people say Maidana won, but it's the exact same story as Castillo, immediate rematch, easy win for FMJ.
IMO if FMJ lost both of the original fights with thos respective opponents, I think the damage to his legacy would be negligible.

Some people say he ducked fights.
I've yet to hear any claim of him ducking fights, that has any real legs to it. If anyone has one, I'd love to hear it.

Obviously there is the argument that there are potentially greater boxers in terms of achievements.

Outside of Monzon, FMJ and Duran, I personally don't think there is any, that we have consistent footage of, that could realistically hold the position of GOAT with any real integrity.

I would love to be proven wrong though, I love me some humble pie.

I believe FMJ is the best to ever do it. Buttt one must concede his low amount of fights compared to the likes Pep, Robinson, Moore, Greb. Those men fought non stop. I’m sure FMJ would have dropped a few on some bad nights. But besides that (not really a fault of Floyd but more of the times) he didn’t fight Manny!!!! To me that is his number one flaw in that he has a chance to fight the other p4p king at the time when both were in their primes...a rare thing by itself and they both couldn’t get a deal done till they were old men. It literally made me stop watching boxing for about three years I was so mad. That to me is his biggest blemish not getting a deal done to fight Manny. I think he would have won but the question will always hang over them now.

He can't be the best. He fought in the modern era.

He was never #1 in any division. Held an alphabet belt and moved on and repeated. Fought once a year against a big name with short limbs 15 years and four weights past their best. Etc.

    I'm sorry, what?

Every part of what you just said is demonstrably false.

    Are you joking?

Another millennial who basically knows nothing about the history of the sport making silly thread. Sigh ....

Do you realise Sugar Ray Robinson had a NINETY EIGHT fight winning streak and had a record of 128 - 1 - 2 at one stage.

Floyd is a great fighter but in my opinion he wouldnt make the top forty best fighters in history. He didnt beat one prime, great fighter. He made sure all his opponents post Castillo had either been beaten badly previously and were well past their prime ( see Pacquiao, Cotto, Mosely or even De La Hoya ) and he made sure he stayed well clear of anyone who had a reach advantage over him.

You have to take risks and dare to be great to be the GOAT or accomplish something nobody else did.
Floyd did neither. Canelo is his best win in my opinion but of course he had to put a catch weight restriction on the Mexican.

That's a bold statement considering there's been the likes of SRR, Duran, SRL and RJJ etc.

Robinson didn't fight the best black fighters of his era.

The accusation that Mayweather didn't fight the best prime fighters is complete nonsense. In the end, once promotional restriction was removed, he fought everyone. And he beast everyone

Okay first off, not a millennial, and if you think just because someone is born in a different era to you, their opinion is invalid, then we already know there's gonna be a hefty amount of bias in your opinion.

I hear what your saying, and I try to learn as much as I can about this sport, I respect the old time greats for what they have done, but I can't base my opinion off of someone else's opinion.

Unless I have consistently seen a fighter perform, I don't think it's fair to hold any strong opinion on them.

There isn't enough footage of most of the old time greats, for me to just accept their accomplishments based on others opinion.

Some people think Tyson Fury's glove was tampered or whatever, sane people don't, but I can't have an opinion unless I've seen it myself.
I've obviously seen both fights, and don't believe that BS conspiracy, but do you understand what I'm trying to say?

I'm happy to be proven wrong, as I've said.

It's just that I don't really understand the merit of the arguments.
Who else should he have fought?
What belts should he have taken?
At the later stage of his career for sure there were periods of inactivity, but isn't that the case for most "modern" fighters? He was just waiting for the biggest fights.

I mean he held belts from literally every major sanctioning body at various weights.
    Can that be disputed?
