Max Schmeling V Comeback Foreman?

Really? Then who is a top puncher? I don't talk about power, but overall punching delivery and ability.

 

I don't think that Abe Simon or Buddy Baer were ever ranked in the same year as Schmeling.

Even Galento is a marginal case for being a fighter from the same era.

 

Galento better puncher than Schmeling? Are you insane? Do you understand that power is not everything in punching?

I think that Galento Baer Jr and Simon probably did hit harder than Schmeling.

Were they stopping better fighters than Schmeling though?

Schmeling hit hard enough to stop iron chinned Risko, Stribling, Hamas and he was the only one who stopped Louis in his prime.

I can’t see max scoring a knockout here. Foreman was durable even in old age and went 12 rounds while taking a lot of big shots from guys who could crack. His best chance is to win a decision. Problem is I don’t think he can back up Foreman nor take too many of his punches. George’s cross arm defense would be hard to penetrate. And max wasn’t the type of fighter to dance circles around plodding punchers. If he was then by that logic he should have been able to do it against Baer. I’m going with Foreman by stoppage or KO.

 

The problem with Baer fight is that Schmeling fought by far the worst fight on film we have against him. He looked far worse than in other fights.

I can't pick here a clear winner because Schmeling would outbox Foreman without much problems, but I also agree that his style is far from the best against someone like Foreman. I agree that Max would not KO Foreman, he was a tank that couldn't be stopped at this point.

 

I guess anything can happen in this sport. I just don’t think schmeling had the chin or the right set of tools to beat Foreman at any stage

 

Surely there is a universe of difference, between young Foreman, and old Foreman?

Old Foreman might stop the weaker lineal champions, and then possibly only if they make a mistake!

I am not sure that old Foreman was to be honest.

I suspect that most lineal champions, would have had a fairly routine night against him!

 

I disagree here - look at how competitive he was against peak Evander who was one of the best champions ever at this division.

 

well Moorer was a lineal champion. 28 years of age, undefeated 35-0 and a south paw to boot. He was Ko’d. Evander Holyfield was a lineal champion undefeated in his prime and now sits in most people’s top 10. He got taken 12 rounds and had to eat some pretty big punches before settling for a decision. That’s a rough routine. Schmeling was a great fighter but not what I’d consider to be the top 15 sort of variety. Like Moorer he was a light heavyweight and one without a very good chin to boot.
