Jones in his absolute prime was the complete fighter Calzaghe was fantastic but was at no point better than Jones
Neither Jones or Calzaghe did what Eubank did, or even come close. He was in great fights and came storming back so many times, he was super active and travelled. As for head to head, I'd take Nunn or Toney at their best as the tops.
I am surprised people are mentioning Ottke as a contender. Reid schooled him in what was the most biased officiating and judging ever seen in a boxing match. Best obviously was Calzaghe followed by Ward.
Calzaghe is in the argument alongside the undefeated Sven Ottke , Chris Eubank Sr etcas European candidates however when all is said and done you have to say Roy Jones Jr, Andre Ward and James Toney stand alone as the best of the best.
Everything is important. Yes, obviously the first thing to look at is someone's resume. But there's nothing wrong with rating someone on a H2H basis, in terms of ability. Otherwise you're just looking at numbers. Pick any SMW you want. Let's start with Sven Ottke and give an honest opinion. Was he a better fighter than Roy? Does he hold a better win at the weight than Roy's over Toney? Did he beat his competition as easy as what Roy did? Do you think he'd have beaten Roy had they have fought? Now my answers to the above questions are all: No He wasn't a better fighter than what Roy was at the weight. He doesn't have any win that compares to Roy's easy win over Toney. He struggled with guys like Brewer and Reid, and it's debatable whether he was even undefeated. There's no way he'd have beaten Roy at SMW. Now, do you disagree with any of that? I'm not going to rank him above Roy, just because he has the better statistics. That would be ridiculous. Are you going to tell me that Ottke should be rated above Toney and Ward as well, based on the fact that he made more title defences? Get real. Regarding Paz, sure, he had no business being in the ring with Roy. But look at the knockout. How many knock outs have you seen in your life, where a guy throws a 6 punch combination whilst walking forwards? You have never seen a better SMW in your life than a prime version of Roy Jones at 25-26. Nobody comes close. And I don't care about their statistics.
1. No he wasn't. 2. You are absolutely obsessed with the Montell Griffin fight. Why are you so obsessed with it? You literally mention it on every single thread that mentions Roy. Montell was a very good fighter. He had a unique style, he was small and thickset, and he was at one time trained by Eddie Futch. He was a world class fighter, who had 2 very technical and close fights with James Toney. Yes, he caused Roy problems in their first fight, until Roy turned the fight around. Roy was then rightfully DQ'd. Roy then blasted him out with a lead uppercut in under a minute. But instead of praising Roy for a stunning knockout, all you can say, is: "Roy left himself open" "Joe would have toyed with Griffin" So what's your deal? Enlighten me.
