Let's bring back the Larry Holmes senior's belt

?

The seniors league. Good idea?

  1. I would love to see these guys have a shot at some dignity by fighting each other

  2. What the...are you out your mind? These guys should be playing checkers on a porch.

    Just hear me out.

Anyone remember when they tried this? They wanted to make Holmes-Foreman, I think, and ended up with Holmes-Bonecrusher II. I have no idea with Holmes ever defended the belt.

My point is, these guys are going to fight anyway. Still active in the heavyweight division:

    Oliver McCall 54
    Ray Austin 49
Shannon Briggs 48 (coming back to bare knuckle, but talking about regular fights)
    Dominick Guinn 44
    Serhei Liakovich 43
    Alexander Ustinov 43
    Kingpin Johnson 40
    Lucas Browne 40
    Mariusz Wach 40
Sam Peter 39 (maybe actually ten years older)
    Joihnny Duhaupas 39
    Chris Arreola 39

Soon to join the over the hill community...
    Alexander Povetkin 40
Luis Ortiz 41 (definitely at least really 50)

Look, these guys are fighting, and mostly getting their brains beaten out, anyway. Wouldn't you rather see them fight each other? They could go at just a little slower pace, and some of them would actually have to win. It would be a return to previous dignity of sorts.

    Two added benefits:
    1) When guys inevitably make comebacks, they will have a better goal than fighting the young guys.
    2) Gatekeepers like Sherman Williams, guys who never really made it, will get another shot at the big time, as age is a bit of a leveler.

I dont think any sanctioning body should encourage washed up fighters to continue destroying themselves. Not that it will stop them, but it's a bad PR move.

If the sanctioning bodies have the green light for Toney an holyfield to fight prime fighters whilst they were old and slurring they would certainly sanction this.

I wouldn’t mind seeing an Oliver McCall v Briggs on an undercard. Everyone would watch it

How about the guys you list above compete in a potato sack race, arm wrestling, horseshoes, anything but getting hit in the head.

Sounds fun but ultimately not worth the risk for our entertainment

These guys don't need any additional incentive to make an ill advised ring return. This just gives someone a stage who may not have had one before, and that is a bad thing. Dislike!

Yeah, I'd love to see a boxing "seniors league." Far better than having some of these old warhorses serve as cannon fodder for up and comers, and it might lead to some interesting competitive matchups too!

Zero chance that Sam Peter is only two years older than me. :nono: I'll need to see a long-form birth certificate (and even then might remain skeptical).

All right. In light of all the talk of comebacks, let's re-visit this thread.
