This is great thread and must of the ones I would pick have been said. The greatest being Walker vs Greb. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the fights between Robinson and Lamotta that were so close that people thought Jake was robbed. With that said I would pick Pep vs Graves. I would be interested in seeing the round that Willie claimed win without throwing a punch. Pep is an absolute joy to watch. I would like to add that I feel pretty blessed to have what we actually have. Joe Gans, Langford..Johnson etc. I couldn’t imagine only hearing about how good Robinson or Louis was but not seeing them. You might not believe it.
I'd like to see the NABF Middleweight Title fight between Ronnie Harris and Sammy NeSmith. I saw the knockout on the local Indianapolis newscast the night of the fight and the ending was Rocky-esque with Nesmith barely standing up and hitting Harris with a desperation from-the-floor shot to Kayo him. If you guys saw what I remember, you'd never forget it. Just an amazing scene like out of a movie. I'm not educated on the 20's-50's fighters like you guys are experts on, so I'll stay modern; I'd also like to see Tony Chiaverini KO 10 "Mad Dog" Ross as there is no tape on Ross out there and he was the #1 Contender at 154 lbs at one time. Walter Moore vs Roy Williams. The history guys can't even agree on what round Williams ended it in and there's no writeup on the fight in Ring magazine or otherwise. Roughhouse Fischer vs Michael Dokes. How does a semi-main event with the hottest heavyweight in the world on the Ali-Holmes undercard for Chrissakes not only not get taped and replayed, but there are literally no pictures of it anywhere from ringside? I'll take a cell-phone or VHS tape of when the lowlifes jumped Jesse James Hughes in the Bottoms of Mobile, AL and left him unconscious to drown in a culvert just so they could get their just due. You guys continue discussing fight history at the high level you were before I interrupted....
Olivares murdered poor Alan. A great performance, although Rudkin was past his best, but surely not a great fight.
My favorite fighter is Ricardo Chapo Lopez. He fought a guy names Guerson Gerrera and he put on the most impressive profession boxing exhibition I have ever seen. I taped it in 2003 I think on VHS. I wish I could find someone with that fight.
I, too, would love to see this one. I’m from the same town in Alabama where Ross was from and he was well known. He had the longest active win streak in the sport at one time, or maybe it was KO streak. Saw him spar a time or two past his prime, when I think he was contemplating a comeback. He was a swarmer, helluva body puncher, super aggressive. Good comparison might be James “Hard Rock” Green or Curtis Parker. And during his career, Ross was one of the best-conditioned fighters on the planet, complete conditioning nut. All that being said, Ross and Chiaverini were similar in that they were both what I’d call ‘world-class club fighters.’ Neither was quick enough, skilled enough or hit hard enough to compete at the highest level. However, had either of them gotten a shot against a Rocky Mattioli or Elisha Obed or someone of that level, I’d have liked their chances. Nice shoutout on the late Jesse James Hughes, too. I think he played with fire, used to brag about setting up drug deals and then beating up the dealer and taking his money (and drugs, from what I understand). I think in the end he got set up.
I remember all those too, including Roughhouse Fischer. Heard he was really robbed in Chicago against George Mostardini, whom they were really pushing. Great hearing about Mad Dog Ross and Jesse Hames Hughes again.
