Archie had an ATG chin, ATG power, ATG reflexes, great speed and freakish talents in recovery and longevity. He had far more than just his skill.
Yeah, and they'd be wrong. Toney's chin, reflexes, fitness and power are all more than just skills and IQ.
But it's way more than that. All but a few other world class boxers pale in comparison to him in those aspects and they were taught very well.
That's easy: Ali. Far below average physically, yet incredibly intelligent and super-humanly awkward and skilled. He outsmarted his opponents in and outside the ring. Broke their will with his skill. Especially mid- to late career Ali was nothing to look at physically. He bloated up in between fights on sugary soda pop by the gallon.
He was taller by a few inches. Thats all he had. Hopkins rarely weighed 170 on fight night, even in his 40s when he was still at 160lbs. Specinen my ass.
70s Ali, maybe. 60s Ali was taller than all but one or two of his opponents, heavier than the majority, & faster than all without exception. hence, I suppose, the 29-0 record.
The guy in my avatar is massively overlooked in ATG discussions due to never having his big breakout moment, but he has wins against guys who are always in the lists. Athletically, he was nothing special at all. His success was all on account of his fundamentals and balance, his rounded skillset, his sense of timing and his general boxing IQ.
