There are so many asterisks about this fight: why did Victor headbutt Floyd? Why did he deny doing it? Why did he kiss Floyd while Floyd was like '**** outta here man? Why did he hug floyd again after butting him? Why does he fight in the southpaw stance when it makes his style so strait up like the Eastern European style? Why did Cortez not break it up instead of allowing the suckerpunch? Why did Victor lose even with a 15 pound weight advantage? Who had the cool idea to put ortizs tattoo as a screen print on a shirt? Why did Victor act so happy after losing? Why was Floyd so respectful while Larry didn't give him a fair shake? Eversince when did Larry hate on Floyd? Who would've won 50 years ago Larry or floyd mythologically speaking? Why did Victor say he wasn't a dirty fighter and that nobodies perfect? These are the things that stood out to me while watching the fight, anybody ever see a fight with so much bizarre stuff going on? Do you agree that this fight was a little bit crazy???
Here's a couple more : Why did Floyd say if he want a rematch he can get a rematch then refused to give him a rematch? Why did Floyd have his arm around Larry throughout the interview like they were best friends, then out of nowhere explode on Larry and say he wasn't giving him a fair shake when Larry was actually in the process of complimenting him on how he was in charge of the fight, how he was aggressive and how he took advantage of what Mayweather saw as flaws in Ortiz. Larry was actually trying to come up with a way to explain what happened that made it seem that Mayweather was justified in how he reacted. I honestly don't think it was fair of Mayweather to say that Larry never gave him a fair shake. I mean, anyone who watched the fight and saw how it ended wouldn't deny that the way it ended was controversial. I never thought it made sense for Floyd to act like Larry wasn't giving him a fair shake or taking away from his victory, when he was simply trying to discuss what happened. Larry was totally shocked by this outburst he looked straight into the camera like "what in the hell just happened".
Floyd may have just wanted the interview to be over, but nothing Larry said in that interview was disrespectful or unreasonable given how oddly the fight ended. What are some examples of Larry being rude to Floyd in the past? To your point though, it seemed like it was more about Floyd using this as an opportunity to get even with Larry for maybe some of the stuff he said in the past, rather than anything that Larry was saying in that particular interview. I think a lot of people were so shocked by Floyd's outburst because Larry really wasn't being disrespectful to Floyd there at all. Any interviewer would have asked the kinds of questions that Larry was asking with a fight ending so oddly and controversially like that. So whether or not Larry had been rude to Floyd in the past, Larry certainly wasn't being rude or disrespectful to Floyd in that interview whatsoever, which makes Floyd's outburst unjustified imho.
I stand corrected, the respect that Larry had for Floyd during the chico- Mayweather days was still relevant.
Now I just have one question to ask y'all................... What if the situation had been reversed? What if Ortiz had cowardly cold cocked a totally defenceless Floyd with his best combination ??? Do you think for one second Cortez would have DQ'd ORTIZ ? In a heartbeat he would. Floyd is very lucky he cannot punch his way out of a wet paper bag as he could easily have seriously hurt Ortiz or even worse. Yes Ortiz was wrong in head butting Floyd but he was obviously frustrated by Floyds grabbing & holding elbow smashes etc which Cortez was ignoring as usual. Cortez rightly took a point from Ortiz & wasnt even looking at the fighters when Floyd struck Cortez NEVER gave the instruction " Box on" Floyd should have been DQ'd
You know what's crazy, looking back at the footage. Right after Ortiz headbutted Floyd, and before Cortez got in there to separate the fighters, Ortiz threw a left hook that just missed and whizzed by Floyd's unprotected head as Floyd was telling Cortez that he was headbutted. If Ortiz would have connected with that left hook Floyd might have been knocked out since he didn't have his gloves up, and it would have landed like on the side / back of Floyd's head.
This was a strange one indeed. I remember even talking to people about this fight was weird. I talked to an ex amateur Olympic fighter named randall thompson about this fight and he liked the way it unfolded - I was pissed, I paid 70 dollars to see that?
The fight was fixed. Two FREE punches and Ortiz wasn't KO'd cold? And you could see Cortez with this blank expression on his face like hurry the **** up! The Mosley fight was most likely fixed as well.
I remember getting up early to watch that fight live. I sat through the undercard and then the weird fight. I was pissed with Floyd initially, but after seeing it a few times replayed Floyd did nothing wrong. Joe Cortez had been declining for some years by that stage. It was getting time for him to stop refereeing and sit down to watch the event.
Don't say that Ortiz didn't had it coming, but 2 suckerpunches in a row is low d--k move in any circumstance. And the equally s--t referee looked like of he belonged in WWE instead.
It was a cowardly move by floyd, but ortiz is a moron and mentally off. The fact that floyd fans approve of sucker punch K.O's tells you everything you need to know about them.
