Eddie Futch Vs Angelo Dundee

Futch and in my opinion it isnt even close.
He came up with game p!ans like Spinks vs Qwai and if you watch them in the corner Futch is always offering technical advice and while Dundee is good hes more of a motivator in my opinion.

It seems Dundee liked his fighters to strick and move, while Futch liked his fighters to employ educated pressure.

 

I am sure that the success of a great boxer is much more determined by his own talent than by his coach, I am sure that there are better coaches who were not lucky and only worked with mediocre boxers. Dundee didn't do ****, He didn't make Ali or Leonard, they had been just as good without angelo.

Thomas wasn't a mover nor was Berbick,Napoles was a stalker.Futch was a master strategist ,Dundee was a good motivator.I wouldn't class him as a teacher.

 

What do you think Dundee could teach the 45 year old Foreman?

 

Futch is in a different class to Dundee. I always thought Dundee was a bit of a windbag who chanced his way into big pay days, and he loses major credit for hanging around in the Ali corner and taking a cut when it was clear Ali was showing signs of neurological damage. The big fuss he made of eventually stopping the Holmes fight sticks in the throat, especially when it was really the Nation of Islam who okayed it from outside the ring.
Comparing that to a guy like Futch, who goes from Joe Louis through to Riddick Bowe, is comical. Futch never had to yell in the corner because he actually gave thoughtful, tactically useful advice in the corner. It's like matching Arsene Wenger against Barry Fry.

Foreman had his plan going into the fight soft jabs to set up his right hand.Dundee carried the bucket and towelled him off.

 

Joe Gossen guided Michael Nunn to the title, he never looked better than under Joe Goosen. After he left Goosen he lost shortly after to James Toney. And to be honest I remember when him and Joe Goosen split but I had forgotten that Angelo Dundee became his trainer I guess he was the trainer after Joe Goosen or maybe he was later on in Nunn’s career. Again I can’t remember but I know he was never better than under Goosen.

as far as the question overall I agree with what other poster have said. Eddie Futch was definitely the better trainer (teacher) and strategist. Angelo was more of a motivator and a rah rah guy.

Eddie gets a free pass on some blowouts he was on the other side of. I sure do not give him a get out of jail free card for that.

I prefer and think Angie was better. And just who else is holding the reigns on strong headed guys like Basilio & Ali & Leonard? Not an easy job dealing with those egos---especially after they made big money.
