To be fair ortiz is a very good fighter. Its a great win for wilder. The only real drawback to it is ortiz was 40 years old and wilders style was/is a nightmare for ortiz. He was cleverly picked by wilders team imo. A good fighter but one who wasn,t great against wilders style. It was pretty clear after ortiz fought scuba steve. Who he beat comfortably but ortiz couldn,t really deal well with a mover that didnt go to him. He hoodwinked jennings into coming into him. Jennings actually landed a lot more punches that night but ended up battered.

Ortiz will always struggle with movers but if you go to him and throw first hes an excellent fighter. The cuban styles good but its a pretty flawed style.

Overall its a great win. I still say ortiz would give joshua a great fight.

This. Ortiz was a very good fighter, but by the time he got a title shot he was already 2-3 years too old, which is a shame.

I also agree that Wilder did have a bad style for Ortiz, who even back in his amateur days had a bad habit of being a sucker for right hands.

Even in the thread people are trying to big-up Ortiz, a guy who had to fight to be medically cleared for the first fight. How soon we forgot that the day before the fight we weren't sure if he would be able to fight because of his high-blood pressure.

Utterly disgraceful that part-time fighters weren't crappy enough for Wilder. They had to target fighters medically unfit.

As the OP said Ortiz's biggest win was Jennings who really was nothing but a fringe contender who just is a bit more well know because he went 12 rounds with Wlad (lost wide from memory).

Otherwise did nothing of not other than get busted for frug a couple of times and we he finally stepped up to world level got stopped both times..

One of the most over rated fighters on this forum...

The win over Ortiz doesn’t make anyone ATG, but It was enough to prove that he was a legit top HW.

Ortiz was a tad overrated after the Jennings win(then again, Jennings was a hot commodity at the time, he was the first to make Wlad look old, became a bit of a fan favourite and despite being the betting underdog, he was the favourite among the fans and he was highly rated by the Ring too.) but ever since becoming associated with Wilder, he’s been more underrated than overrated. I mean, you can’t possibly be overrated when there are far more people who think you’re overrated than those who actually rate you.

Wilder fans trying to push Ortiz as a great win was laughable at times, but what’s more laughable is some of Wilder dictators going nuts and acting hysterical to discredit him, even more laughable is them going nuts and acting hysterical to discredit Jennings to discredit Ortiz to discredit Wilder.

Yeah, Grandpa Ortiz is easily the most overrated HW since Ike Ibeabuchi. And like Ike, his rep is based on a couple of fights, while the rest of his record is, basically, mediocre.

Ortiz is too stationary with a small gastank on top of that.

Someone like Pulev would destroy him due to this.

    Jab, grab and drain him.

Most overrated fighter on the board for sure. And people are still trying to bring his reputation up. Not to mention Jennings fight was 3 years before first Wilder fight, when Ortiz was probably 40. So Jennings fight is irrelevant to Wilder fight. 3 years is a huge gap, and when you past your 30s, just 1 ear could be the difference between prime and looking and past it. And after 35 that process increase even more.

Ortiz wasn't even the best amateur heavyweight in his days in Cuban system. I always said his boogeyman tag was totally undeserved.

And what was Jenning's claim to fame? Not being blasted out by Wlad? Great. He never beat a top 10 fighter. Has he even beaten a top 20 fighter?

Have you seen the HW division? I'd say Ortiz was a pretty good fighter on the eyetest alone. Most consistent jab in the division. Whooped Jennings. Made Malick Scott run for his life. Arguably didn't lose a round to Wilder in which he wasn't knocked down in. Puts him on par with Fury in that regard.

He never had the leverage to get the fights he deserved. Didn't really have a reckoning until he was old. Kind of a what-if scenario. Politicizing this to hate on Wilder is stupid. If you like Fury, then putting down his best win only hurts him. Go for a walk.

The best amateur of his day was Teofilo Stevenson.
