How anyone can pick the Thrilla in Manila as overrated is beyond me, it’s become fashionable in some quarters to do so. If we didn’t know who those two heavies were we still would have been in awe. The intensity and punch rate was remarkable for any heavyweight contest, never mind for 2 men well past their prime.
Completely agree - it's an automatic top 5 heavyweight fight in history and I'd put it at no. 1 (or no. 2 at worst)
Not bashing it. It was a significant fight and great achievement by Duran, I just don’t find it particularly great to watch. There was a lot of mauling close quarters fighting, not a lot of clean punching, not much in memorable exchanges. I actually remember being disappointed the first time I saw it thinking I was going to see a Duran masterpiece. I didn’t. It’s Durans greatest achievement but not his greatest performance.
I hesitate to call it overrated but Chavez-Taylor 1 is a weird one. For 8 rounds, it's a great performance from Taylor and round 10 is a great standout round and of course, the finish is hugely dramatic and controversial...but it's not great in terms of back and forth action as Chavez is a way behind on the cards. Without the ending, it wouldn't rate nearly as high.
Hell yeah, it was PPV, it's both guys biggest payday to date, and highly anticipated, I think I paid like 79.99 to watch it, and it was boring.
That's what I'm saying. It was a shitty fight if I was able to see into the future I definitely wouldn't have ordered it.
Lol you really are an idiot, Tyson vs Holyfield was one of the biggest upsets of all time in boxing dummy!
Exactly, especially after the second fight was a bore. Frazier was viewed as totally shot going into the fight which he was. But due to his hatred of Ali, he pulled out one last great performance even though he didn't win and neither guy was the same after the fight.
1Leonard/Hearns 1 to me was boring. 2Leonard/Hagler is both boring & embarrassing for Haglers total anti-Hagler like performance. 3every Mayweather fight above 130 sucked life out of the audience. 130 he was Super exciting and great. And deadly. And great.
