Ruiz had to be one of the ugliest HW champs we’ve ever seen. I’d rather do household chores than watch any of his fights. He wasn’t a club fighter though. He was a genuine top 10 HW of his time. Had he only have been a low level scrub, then any top 30 HW of the time would have beaten him with ease. Yet they didn’t. Tua knocking him out when he was young doesn’t change that. Evander was obviously very faded when he fought Ruiz. But he wasn’t completely shot and he should have beaten Valuev years later. If Ruiz was that bad, then even a faded version of Evander should have beaten him with ease. Yet he didn’t. They split 3 close fights.
Really? He's worse than Charles Martin? Worse than Stiverne? Or Michael Bentt? Maybe he was the HW titlist with ugliest style of all time, but the guy fought anyone, made most of his opponents look bad and carved out a very solid career for his limitations. There's a thread about best HWs of the last 30 years or so and one can make a case for him being top20 in that time frame.
As much as Jones was one of my favs looking back his resume wasn't great. He fought far more bums than legit competition. Thats facts man. Compare his resume to Hopkins.
I don’t think he’s overrated or ranked too highly. He is, due to his most ardent supporters that he made opponents look like nobodies. Again, the majority of his fans take that position while also elevating his career based on his wins over Toney and Bernard. Yes, he fought a lot of mandatories. But he had obligations from all 3 of the main orgs after he’d obtained all of the main belts. Sure he had obligations but Jones fought often enough to take on tougher opposition. He beat guys like nobody else did. This is the argument that his fans make often. As I've pointed out a few times already. Though, when Roy faced guys a level or two above the Harmons and Kellys of the boxing landscape, he fought to somewhat of a stalemate is the way I'll put it. What I mean by that, is that on some level he was less effective until he landed something of note on said opponent or they were fatigued enough that Jones opened up more. Obviously Bernard, Griffin, and Tarver to name a few... levels above Kelly, Hall and the like. They fought on even terms with Roy, outside of Bernard, the other guys are good not great fighters. He was the only guy to knock out Virgil Hill in his career. And Hill went on to win a belt at CW. Virgil Hill was a good fighter. He was there to fight against Jones. He burnt muscle to drop back down to beat Tarver whilst he was exhausted in the 2nd half of the fight. It was a bad decision to burn back down to LHW. He did more than enough to warrant most people’s high ranking. Not while his peers in the P4P rankings were fighting tougher opposition. Even in a loss, I rank his peers ahead P4P based on strength of opposition. If he was fighting today, nobody from JMW to LHW would be favoured over him. If he were fighting now I'd like to see him against the Krusher, GGG, Canelo, Ward, Froch, Pascal, Stevenson, etc... because I seriously doubt he would be regarded the way he is now. Also, take into account guys like Ward, GGG, Canelo are/were more technically sound than Roy who rarely used a jab and fought from distance leaping in with shots. Although his competition could have been stronger, he can certainly be ranked highly on a H2H basis. He's ranked highly based more on athletic ability than opposition. The argument for him is based on "he was so gifted he would've made such and such look like nobody too"
Roy had a very good-great resume. Hopkins only has longevity over Roy. He spent most of his career fighting naturally smaller guys. Roy has a better resume.
Yet the fighters you hype dont have anyone as good as toney on their resume yet you call them great like ggg for example a guy rjj would have beaten so bad he would have quit the sport. Log off.
Too many hypocrites and people with agendas who can't keep it real on this forum. Rjj didnt beat anyone yet guys like GGG are celebrated and touted as the Goat at mw. Rjj resume is good he's an atg and a hof fighter.
Good lord... get a ****ing grip man.. this isn't a 3G thread. Maybe you should log off.... You're obsessed with this guy ALL because once upon a time, he was asked about a fight w/ Floyd. And all because some fans think he woulda beaten Floyd, you freaked the **** out and went psycho about 3G. You know I'm 100% right about this too.
For the record: I like Roy, I still watch a lot of his fights but he fought more than his share of cherry-picked opponents. But his same hardcore fans say Tyson, Floyd and some others are overrated. To put it another way... Roy beating on Glenn Kelly is the equivalent of Floyd beating on Bruseles or Tyson beating on Lou Saverese. Then the question is how many of those types of victories elevate a particular fighter to P4P status or P4P #1?
Right on cue. Of course you would object to me calling out posters who are hypocrites and have hyped up ggg but tear down a far more proven fighter in rjj. You always have a problem with me even though im speaking truth but dont with haters and trolls with agendas. Why is that? Most of the posters in this thread who are trashing jones are ggg fans yet he's far less accomplished. Get on them instead of coming at me for speaking the truth and telling it like it is.
Dude... your opinion isn't "The truth"... Who the **** cares if 3G fans hyped him up. Why does that freak you out so much? That's what happens in sports FFS. Hell, you hype the **** outta the charlo bros just because they're from Houston. So you hype them, and crap on a MORE accomplished fighter in 3G. So you are doing EXACTLY what you are complaining 3G fans do. EXACTLY!
